Manicomio di Collegno (Certosa)

Abandoned Manicomio di Collegno (Certosa)

This large complex of buildings situated in the town of Collegno Italy was originally a "Certosa," an Italian word for a Carthusian monastery, or "charterhouse." Construction of the monastery was ordered in 1641 by Christine of France, after King Louis XIII made a pilgrimage to the Grand Charterhouse and vowed to build one near Turin. Grandiose plans were repeatedly scaled back due to financial difficulties, however a grand entrance hall was constructed by the architect Filippo Juvarra in ...

Hotel Sterling

Hotel razing months off at minimum

by Jennifer Learn-Andes via The Times Leader

County Council must OK demolition. W-B, county, CityVest must OK cooperation deal. Fed probe results may be awaited. The Hotel Sterling will stand at least a few more months – maybe longer – because the new Luzerne County Council must take a stand on the proposed demolition, officials said Wednesday. The now-eliminated county commissioners had voted in November to allocate $1 million in community development funding to demolish the landmark Wilkes-Barre structure and develop a ...

Time running out for clock tower

by Bob Kievra via WORCESTER TELEGRAM & GAZETTE

WORCESTER —  State officials are seeking approval to demolish the historic Worcester State Hospital Clock Tower building, but local preservationists hope a compromise can be brokered to save some of the structure. The Division of Capital Asset Management and the state Department of Mental Health this month filed paperwork with state environmental officials and the Massachusetts Historical Commission to tear down the five-story, 52,000-square-foot building off Belmont Street after ...

Consonno

Abandoned Consonno

At the foot of the Swiss Alps, in Northern Italy once rested the ancient village of Consonno. Residents had survived here by growing and harvesting leeks, celery, and especially chestnuts from the bountiful trees which grew on the mountain slope. The labor was difficult but fulfilling for the residents - there were around 300 people living here at the beginning of the 20th century. There was one small catch for those that lived and worked at Consonno, however. The land and surrounding ...

About
More information

This site is dedicated to documenting various abandoned places through both text and photographs; recording their transformations through time before they are demolished. The abundance of abandoned asylums and psychiatric hospitals in the New England area create the bulk of the locations here; these beautiful state funded structures are vast and complex, giving insight to both the humanity and mistreatment towards the mentally ill over the past two centuries.

In recent years, there has been a surge of redevelopment projects for these places, and states have been lowering land prices and pushing for bids to buy. Soon, all of these beautiful structures will fall down to meet their fate of becoming golf courses, condos and strip malls.

This project has been collaborated by myself, with help from many others, and all photographs and images are copyright opacity.us unless otherwise noted.

Do not email me for directions or information on how to enter these sites, otherwise your e-mail will be ignored. Comments, both good and bad, are welcome in the comment boxes underneath each photo, but inflammatory and "trolling" remarks will be deleted, and you will be banned from this site. Posting unmentioned location names will also be removed, it kinda defeats the purpose, no? With that all said, enjoy the site!
