An ergometer is a device which measures the amount of work performed.
I could use one of those here in my office - :)
I think that is what we call a "stress test" in the USA, most of the time performed on a treadmill. Used to test physical fitness and fitness for duty for some jobs such as police and firefighters.
@Andy--You are correct, but I don't think it was a treadmill, it was a stationary bicycle. In this building, it was probably for physical therapy.
That makes me think of "House" for some reason...

I think I just watch WAAAAAAAAY too much television.
