It does look like a hornet's nest--or a large puffball fungus.
Lets see... a hive, a deflated punching bag, a pod, a prune, a fake wasp nest....this is so interesting and funny....lol. and no one mentioned a old dried up hemorrhoid... just had toooooooo! :)
