This would beautiful restored with the blue paint & gold lettering. I wonder what was kept in there over the years.
Probably money from passengers who paid cash for there tickets. Back in it's hayday I imagine peopl paid with cash and not credit cards as they do now.
Where is the combination dial?
The safe looks as if it has wheels (right rear), if so, it may have transported any sort of valuables or accountable mail. I have seen railway safes for this very purpose in the past.

ny dad worked for NYC RR 39 years sold tickets right there in the station .
