The 1920 image below shows WW I veterans being treated during the early years of the building, before the wing was used to treat women.

Its so sad how these old buildings get so deteriorated, and left behind with so much history to them!
Look they reduced and blocked off some of the windows, so its possible they did the same in operating room you had a few pictures back.
Quite a change from then until now
I can not understand why anyone would want to paint over that beautiful stonework. And with putrid green to boot!!
How cool is this -
I love the stone on the walls! It makes me think of an era gone by where everything was built with care and with some artistic flair to it...unlike now where everything is pre-made and just thrown together with no love.
Awesome before and after photos! Im with Andy WHY paint over the lovely stonework?
Sorry, forgot to mention the terrific light shadows on the wall and floor.
And now all that is left are the echoes of the past...
an administrator may have thought that the stones reminded the patients of fortifications
Look how well dressed they were. Not very realistic was it.

The two side windows maybe were blocked due to being broken and it was easier/ cheaper to block them than repair?
...one gets the notion to wait and stare at the recent photo, hoping that any moment the light will rise up the stone walls and bring those old forgotten souls once again into focus... like they're still sitting there...
Some of these images I can easily visualize as an oil painting. Such vivid colors and contrast.
that would make a neat background!
Likely, someone got the idea to "brighten up" and "modernize" the place with plastered walls.
IF walla could talk huh..just so sad to see whats become of these places
