It almost looks like part of the grammar training stuff for suffixes and prefixes, though "and" would not fit in that grouping.

The engraving looks well done, yet doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Maybe the engraver was drunk and just said Eff It, they won't notice and just left it.

I saw at first "THE BUT AND SOL"

Which I phonetically spelt out in my mind as as "the but and soul"

A somwhat prison cliche' of : "the heart and soul"

Did they have cellmates here?

i don't know if this might be useful but "ite" is Latin for "you go", meaning the 2nd plural person. for example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ite_missa_est and "sol" is Latin (as well as other languages such as spanish, portuguese, germanic languages and others) for "sun".

If it's Latin it translates to " [You] Go behind the Sun [and]..." Maybe some uplifting quote along the lines of 'after the rain, sun'? Interesting though...
