It's not hard to imagine people swinging about on these ropes back in the days.
I never could climb the rope in school!
Anyone wants to race. I am up for it. I miss you JackieB.
Awesome shot!
Maybe if they keep trying they will master the noose yet?
My old nemesis, the knotted climbing rope. So we meet again. The bane of my junior high existence.
This was the one thing I never had a problem with in gym. Could scale that rope to the ceiling in nothing flat.
haha Ferdy
I couldn't do the ropes either very well.
Ah this takes me back to my time in the army. I never liked climbing the rope because i was always afraid of losing my grip and falling. This is stupid i know do to the fact that i was airborne. I could jump out of a C-130 at 1200' but the rope totally kicked my butt.
I had no prob getting up the rope it was coming down that was the hard part, I was always worried that i would fall... and those little blue mats did not offer much security. Also I did not like the feeling of rope burn on my hands.

I can understand about the rope Vince. Way cool that you jumped out of a C-130 Hercules great planes I can identify one of them just by the sound of them Love the sound of those turboprop engines. They always used to fly over my house that and the odd Star lifters, Galaxy's and on a good day some F-18 Hornets.
@Canada--

I lived near Mather AFB in California when the US was using arc-light strikes from B-52s in Vietnam. I remember hearing the bombers taking off and landing--one every five minutes around the clock.

Peace is our Profession--Strategic Air Command.
The blasted rope was half the problem, the other half was the over zealous gym teacher yelling his head off for me to climb higher, faster.
(Canada) The C-17 Galaxy was the best we used to call it the Cadillac of the sky. The C-130 was like a sardine can but the 141 Star lifter was the worst. It was a vomit ride do to the turbulence and the smell of the aviation full that some how always got in the cabin. Plus they had to almost stall the engines for us to jump out it just sucked for us. I cant say for other units but the 82nd stopped using the 141 back in 2002 but lucky me i got one of the last jumps on one. Well i don't want to clutter up Motts site with my reminiscing about my time in the 82nd airborne. So thanks for the complement and the same to you. You really know your aircraft I'm impressed.
Great Scott Toot! Thats great! We never had to climb these, but we had to see how long we could hold on upside down with our legs wrapped around that rope and knot....What was that about? hahaha!
Good thing the girls never had to climb these ropes back in my day. I don't remember if our gym even HAD ropes...I can still smell the odor of sweat and rubber soled shoes and the rubber balls we used to use for kickball...memories.
OMG I HATED those stupid ropes. I could never climb up them or the knot would hit me in the nuts
Lucie that was part of it too. Our senior year, we were allowed to put first name and grad year on the girder the rope was suspended from lol. Bet they stopped that when they totally redid that school. Never did figure out what the upside down thing was about.
I never liked those ropes myself. You could easily fall or get a bad burn if you slide down them too fast. Hi Debbie, I'm back, miss you too.
Not too sure I'd want to climb that.

Not to come across the wrong way but...
JackieB, Debbie - Maybe leave your 'small talk' out of the comments =)
Like my comment in the first photo, I never understood why we were made to climb these stupid ropes. We were like 10 or 11, already at the most awkward age anyway and this middle aged gym teacher wanted us to climb up these things and if we didn't or couldn't he was right there with that wooden paddle to smack us in the ass! If you smacked a kid with a wooden paddle now, the parents would be sue crazy.
Dang! MY ropes didn't have knots in them >:-(...we just had to "shimmy"..can anyone say...ROPE BURN?!?!?!...eeeeeessshhh. I HATED those things. Fun to climb, not fun to come down. They tried teaching us how to wrap them around our legs in some "special" way, but darn!....I think at least one person from my old gym class is probably stil tangled upside down in one, saying in a small voice, "Hello? Is anybody out there? Little help here?" Cool shot though. Like the field depth.
Poor nvusofmotts (I JUST got your name...envious of Motts right?)...

I had to LOL at your comment though...I can just picture a skinny nerdling of a kid hanging there going "hello?? helllloooo??" lol!!
the rope... brings back memories of pain and suffering. our evil gym teacher didnt help either.
you raaaaang
Highschool P.E. class.... I always felt bad for the guys who couldn't get to the top. The climbing rope was the worst part of the fitness finals...
I hated those ropes. Only cool thing about gym was watching the cute girls strech hehe
MamaToFive: Yep! I SO wish I could see these places (like everyone else on here, right ? :-). Oh, and I'm going to "steal" your word, "nerdling"...love that..lol...:-)
