Very nice shot, Mr. Motts.
This looks very creepy. Just thinking, which poor person had to wear it.
Sad.

Greetings from Germany
Extremely haunting shot.
I've never seen or heard of a mask like that. What sort of situation was that used in?
I would guess to prevent biting, spitting, or self-inflicted damage to the face by compulsive scratching etc.
that is disturbing! I cannot even imagine what it would be like to have to care for those who would have required a mask like that. I feel very sad for both the care giver and the patient.
Oh my gosh. I was almost wondering if that was a helmet or something when I first saw it. A mask? How sad. It reminds me of Hannibal Lecter. Sorry, that's what popped in my head.
i could not imagine having to put one of my kids into a place like this. much less having them restrained with this kind of device.
Kathy W. - Hannibal Lector was my first thaught to.
What Motts wrote makes sense.

Thank you for the new gallery Motts!
interesting find, great photo, I just might have nightmares tonight ;)
Some patients wear helmet kind of like this to prevent injury to themselves from banging their heads against the wall or something hard
My God, that's haunting. I understand these are necessary devices given the circumstances, but it makes them no less horrific for a child. Mr. Motts, the "thought factor" alone makes this an amazing shot.
Mott thanks for the great explanation, I spent sometime even looking at it sideways to figure why a mask. I was trying so hard to fit it on a head, you know like in the roller derby when the "jammers" used to strap on a helmet
Glenn-I totally agree with you.

The reason for the masks makes perfect sense, I just can't imagine someone having to wear one. :-(
Wow, that's creepy but it's also completely heartbreaking to think of the kids that would have to wear something like that.
Chilling. and disturbing.
Now we know why Mick Foley stopped playing Mankind. He probably lost the rest of the costume too- except socko.
Hello Clarice...

*Shivers* I LOVE "Silence Of The Lambs'!! That is the first thing that I thought of too...that other prisoner shouting "Hannibal The Cannibal" when Clarice comes to visit him.

Man. Did you know that Anthony Hopkins is just as creepy in "normal life" too? I saw an interview with him on a morning news show and he is just...CREEPY!!!!!!
For any child to have to wear such a appliance is so awfully sad.
reminds me of the mask that the kid wore in the Nightmare Before Christmas....Lock or Shock I think his name was
I think we all did it appears, but I thought Hannibal as well, and I know what your talkin about Joe..one of the kids that helped the boogieman?
*This is Halloween This is Halloween...*

I LOVE that movie.
Thats really creepy and mixed in with the mold and filth makes it even worse
Oh my gosh. That is very creepy. It is still a good shot though
My quess is that the mask was used with patients who either bit, spit, or both. As cruel as it may have seemed there was probably a method to the madness (no pun intended).
it almost reminds me of corey taylors current mask in slipknot
Those masks can also be used to reform the shape of the skin after severe burns...

It's not all evil you know ;)
Scary....
A mask like this can be used only after other methods of modifying the unwanted behavior have been tried and failed. Its use would have to be ordered by a physicain andt then approved by the organization's human rights committee. The rationale for its use would have to be for reasons of safety and health of both the person wearing it and the staff, NOT to control behavior. Safety does not mean just safety from injury to self or others by uncontrolled aggression, it also refers to infection control (blood-borne pathogens). A program of positive behavior support would have to be in place, with the goal of eliminating the mask altogether. Typically the mask would be approved for use only for 15 or fewer minutes at a time. If the person were still agitated and violent after 15 minutes, the physician wod have to be contacted and sign off on another 15 minutes of use.

At least, those how it's supposed to work where I live and work. Real-life scenarios are often somewhat different, especially if there are not enough staff.
i'm no expert but i would suggest that that may have been worn to protect the wearer from banging their head onto surfaces in front of them.
Hello Clarice.
i was hoping the school had a hockey team :(
Mr Motts, i really love this kind of webs, but this is just awesome, thanks for making it!!!!
Of all the Psychiatric Facilities on this site and ones I've seen irl, this is prolly the most disturbing.
