Seriously, WHAT would possess a person to smear their excrement, oh, anywhere? I understand if a person has some type of mental illness. I guess what I am saying is that did someone who snuck in this building do that or is it left over from when this was used as a hospital? I am hoping it is left over.....

That is incredibly disturbing. Something about the mix of illness and fecal matter. Well really.. the mix of anything and fecal matter.

As disgusting as this is it is also an indicator of a deep psychological problem and in that it is very sad. A large number of the homeless community are homeless do to there mental instability. Take for instance people suffering from schizophrenia. In many cases they ether end up in prison or homilies. It is such an irony that this type of vandalism happened in an old state hospital considering the Reagan administration started a mass closing of state hospitals back in the 80's as a means of cutting the budget for as they looked at it unneeded hospitals. Well i better git off politics here it just frustrates me. They let the equipment rot in the hospital but close the place to save money forcing the mentally ill out on the streets to git pick up by the police which just costs more money and helps no one.

Now medically speaking there are a few mental conditions that carry this symptom and with out evaluating the individual this would be hard to determine but in some who suffering from dementia/alzheimer's this can surface in the last stage of the disease. This is just an assumption for there are a whole list of conditions that can have this characteristic. Ether way it is just sad and scary to think there is this disturbed person running around instead of getting help.

Vince, very well said. It is also upsetting to me that someone who has an illness that would cause them to do something like that is wandering around not being treated. Very sad.

Surreal photo. Lynne is sorely missed. Her "rants" were always insightful, educational, thoughtful & very well written. She was a vault of knowledge and made Opacity three dimensional, often with views from the "other side of the coin" when it came to health care providers at mental health facilities. The ignorant & uninformed dared not engage in a battle of wits with our Miss Lynne for she could dismantle such in one or two sentences leaving the challenger battered & bruised & schooled. And it was glorious to read. I hope she's doing well & returns soon.

I agree Larry. I know I don't have the insights she did and I fall way short of her writing abilities and her eloquence.

I wonder what those little holes were for. I can't help thinking about "Porky's"...anyone who has seen those movies know EXACTLY what I mean. :D

Well, of course it's sad when nobody helps the ill and disturbed. But I am not sure if this is really the background of this... hmm... work of art. Maybe this is just a disgusting joke by some really weird teenager who tried to be funny.

Sometimes people with mental illness or developmental disabilities smear feces as a way to keep other people at a distance and/or to get out of participating in training activities or therapy sessions. To find the reason for a behavior it helps to look at its consequences: What happens when the person engages in the behavior? What function does the behavior serve?

It amazes me that this (and the linked "poop" pic) receive so many comments. But Yea, I have ran into this kind of vandalism before in my explorations, but usually run into it at Walmart, truck stops, and port-o-pottys. absolutely disgusting.
BTW: Awesome to see a new gallery, I never catch it day of, but when I do it always brightens my day. With a wife and kids now, I never find time to explore, and even if I did...never as cool places as Motts does. but I do find it interesting that I may not have seen the Cliffside gallery you linked too, gives me yet another gallery to explore.

Oh. Is that Motts? That is a creepy reflection. The face on the left side and the form in the middle. The feces looks like soap or something more liquid. A runny doo doo? Great shot. When my little one's were first getting potty trained they would "experiment" with poo. One of them even peed in the load area of a toy dump truck. Kids do the strangest things. I suspect a youngster behind this prank.
