Diversions

The molten metal flowed through these troughs on the floor. The apparatus at the intersection might be a skimmer; it "skimmed" off the top portion of the flow which consisted mainly of slag. The impurities in the slag are less dense than the molten steel, so they float, and are diverted into a trough that leads to a slag car, while the pure metal passes under the skimmer and poured into a hot metal car.

Hot to trough.
just don't fall in the trough
Wow. This is like, an OSHA nightmare. You do NOT want to lose your step. Hot molten metal in a rushing, open-sided river streaming across the floor... not a job for the faint-of-heart.
