That is a interesting ceiling. I wonder what the purpose for it was
Yeah the ceiling caught my eye right away too. This room looks lonely.
It sort of looks like it had an acoustic purpose to it.
Like a sound dampening ceiling?
I think poured concrete ,strength without the weight?
my middle school had celings like this, it was for sound blocking due to jets flying over the school

It looks like the decay is slowly working its way from one side of the room to another.
Makes me want waffles dang it!
the material is concrete, the pattern results from waffle formwork. it is relatively structurally efficient and was considered fashionable in the sixties and seventies. This is the only place I have seen it in a retrofit as the photo titled desintegrate shows floor joist framing and floor joist pockets in the masonry wall.
