Mold or fire residue?

I notice that EXIT signs of today are typically made of plastic. This and the others like it are metal, complete with rust. Seems like everything is made on the cheap these days.

it does seem interesting that the exit is there next to what appears to be a boarded up doorway. nice way to tease the sane or insane for that matter.
