Goes up forever. This place was humongous!
Stairway to the Stars?
And free of vandalism.
It looks more like a prison than a hospital. Most of the other buildings I've looked at have really beautiful architecture, this one is so cold and menacing. It doesn't seem the designers made any effort to make it visually appealing at all.
It is a utilitarian design - built for efficiency. Most psychiatric hospitals had turned away from the elegant designs of the 19th century as they proved to be costly to construct and maintain, as well as inefficient and even dangerous for both staff and patients (for ex. blind corners). This building was also constructed in 1939, right at the tail end of the Great Depression, and I'm sure funding was a concern.

There is some nice stone and brick work up on the roof line of this building though: http://www.opacity.us/..._oval_and_facade.htm
That makes sense. On first glance it doesn't appear as old as some of the other buildings because it's so straightforward, but it being built during the depression deffinately had a lot to do with that.
Phallic much?
I know this is strange but what come to my mind is.... that is a long way down. Last view you would see.

Wonderful as always.
Motts, how many floors does this place have exactly?
12 plus a basement.
walking the plank
57 buildings in total
building number 97?
