So is that brick actually the ceiling or is it from the floor upstairs? Have to excuse my ignorance, but I am having a hard time getting my head around the fact that there is bricks "hanging" up there!
Awesome detail with the bricks and pillar showing their age.
I think thay are actually hanging bricks!

the mind baffles :D
The bricks in the ceiling has me wondering also.
Hardhat needed in to explore here.
I think the forgot about gravity and decay when they built this.
Brick ceilings are certainly an oddity - but remember in the 1880s they were trying to make this place "fireproof," due to having lost the original structure to a fire. If those bricks have remained suspended for over 130 years, they must have had an expert mason to install them! That pillar on the other hand, is magnificent!!
Freakin' Awesome to say the least! Now I'm in love with brick ceilings!!
I believe the barrel vault design keeps the bricks together using the pressure exerted by the weight of the materials above.
I may be mistaken, but the pillar looks like it's made of iron with a glaze over it. Wonderful contrast to the brick!
Looks like a barrel vault with the lower ends tucked into a steel I-beam.

Then the "brick beams" look like it's also held up with steel bands.

Sorry, not steel, since it's rusted, cold iron? I'm not so hip on the fireproofness of this now. Seems like cold iron has a relatively low melting point and could potentially start sagging if the room furnishings produced enough heat.
I was wondering how they got the bricks to stay up there. Thanks for all the good info! I have never seen brick ceilings.
Ab-fab details!
i've seen this in mexico. they vault the ceilings and the presure of the brick works as support the same as an arch would. in mex they actually place plywood up and then lay the bricks on top of it. when finished they remove the plywood and clean the bricks. looks awesome
Wow, I'd be scared of walking around under a brick ceiling...lol... one of those would bonk you pretty good! lol
This shot is gorgeous.
Amazing brick ceiling, and a fantastic shot of the column details.
Looks like someone tried to stave off the decay. See the white toothpaste looking stuff? It's pretty recent. Maybe it's "greatstuff."
I mean it's in the right places to protect, right?
