The shuttered main entrance had a small vestibule with a vaulted ceiling, marble floors, and ornate woodwork carved into a heavy mahogany door.

Well, Merc, I assume there were some visitors. The hospital would want to leave a grand first impression. And who is to say that insane people cannot appreciate beauty anyway? There is some amazing and talented artwork done by institutionalized people that proves the contrary is true.

They probably wanted a grand hall at the main intrance to make people think it was a good place. Lovely photo by the way.
