Hydrotherapy Room

Hydrotherapy Room

This fairly intact hydrotherapy room was another very interesting find in a remote corner of the building. The apparatus in the left foreground is a control station, with a 360° shower in the back corner, inlaid with what seemed to be thick marble. A continuous flow bathtub sits on the right.

Some might recall this type of control station in the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest:

Here is a photo of this setup being used at Walter Reed Hospital in D.C. (1920, via Shorpy):

And again, at Allentown State Hospital (1946 pictorial report):

The one from WR looks like fire hose therapy. That spray had to hurt. They sure didn't get a lot of privacy.,
BTW I love the old pictures...gives a great visual on how that room was used.
Agreed. You'd expect more contrast between the two time periods, but short of being in b&w, there really isn't much!
Thanks much for the photos! the guy working the controls in the last shot looks like hes enjoying it!
Now I can see how these people probably didn't get well very fast or even if ever!
Oh this is such a lovely place.
So many fun things to experience.
oh yeah I am sure those guys LOVED having their picture taken showing how the stuff is used
If these poor people didn't have mental issues before this, they sure would have afterwards! At least I know this would have put me over the edge!!
Water fight anyone?
all i can say is i really feel sorry for all those who had to go through that.....its bad enough they had to suffer with their illness...then get treated worse than an animal....im surprised they just didnt start sending them up in space instead of dogs and monkeys....i mean really they were treated so bad.....its so sad!
I agree.
Just shows how barbaric we treated individuals , even now I think its done.
that's horrible. I'm actually cryong to think of the way mental patients were treated back then.
*crying
That looks like a Vichy(soisse) shower at a spa.
Now i realy crnt complain about my shower . WOW , 360 degrees ..thats ... HOT !
I agree with the bad treatment these poor souls would receive...but I wouldn't at all mind a 360 degree shower for myself.
idk...i'm pretty comfy with my steam shower myself lol
i think the water looks fun :)
it seems like everyone imagines it being horrible, but don't you think it had to be happy sometimes too? I mean the ppl in the photos seem fine
i believe the reference to the 360 degree shower meant the water hit you from all sides as in a 360 degree circle not degrees of temperature.
