Each oven has a stand pipe located at the top of the battery, which collect gases and feed them into the gas main.

Motts???? What does the number on the pipes stand for D20 & D21.
I believe each oven had a number - this let everyone on top of the coke battery know which oven was which.
man i would hate to see those things explode not like they could now or any thing but still
they DO look dangerous...
The gas was 1200 to 1800F. The stand pipes were refractory lined. Once inside the main the gasses were cooled to 180F with an ammonia water spray.
