This was interesting! Another awesome set Motts! Thank you!
Motts, you may not be happy with the quality of these photos, but we are! Thank you for sharing them and as always your pics make us happy!
Absolutely wonderful stuff, Motts. You should be well chuffed with this set! Not only are the photos immense, but the facts were really interesting too. Thank you!
Wow after looking at the museum site...this place was humongous!
WOW!!!!!! Another wonderful Gallery to see everyday Thanks Motts. Keep taking more pictures.
Thnx for posting Motts! This is the site that has the last two Hulett ore unloaders I had mentioned. You may had seen them on the dock. Giant mechanical monsters. The last 2 of 75 built, hopefully the efforts to save one will be successful.
Lots of rust... I like rust... I think you take some really good pictures Motts and can barely wait for more.
autoguy - yeah those Heuletts look to be on the opposite side of the river, next to the LTV Coke Plant, which we scoped out the same day I shot Acme... they still had power, security, etc. at the time but I don't think the plant was operational. It didn't look very interesting so we skipped it, but now that I know those unloaders are back there...
Motts, do you do research on the places you visit before you shoot them so you have an idea of how you want to shoot it? Or do you research after you have taken the shots...or a little of both? For this location, was it just shot organically, or did you have an idea ahead of time of parts if it that you were looking to shoot?
Very nicely done collect Motts. Thanks so much for the update.
Katy - no unfortunately I don't have the time to do any kind of comprehensive research before I head out... I just try to determine 1) where the place is, and 2) if it's abandoned.

At this location, I really had no idea what I was looking at, since I knew nothing about coke plants. But now after researching this, and the one in Germany, I know a heck of a lot more about the process and certain components of these kinds of facilities - and I might seek out specific areas to photograph the next time I explore one of these.

I think this is true for almost all the kinds of abandoned places I seek out...
And thanks to you, I've learned a heck of a lot about places like this, not to mention abondoned hospitals! Thank you Mr. Motts!
Thank you Mr. Motts! I knew nothing about coke plants before so thanks for the info. I thought the pictures were wonderful regardless of the cloudy day.
As a few others said, the grey skies only added to the atmosphere,
thanks Motts
motts, I tried email a couple months back. I'd love to send ya fan art....email me at ginberry21@yahoo.com
I swing by this site about once a week, hoping to see something new. Sometimes if you haven't updated yet I swing by the archive and dig. Your pictures frighten me, warm me, give me hope, make me sad, all of it. Before I found your site, I never knew that the decomposition of the past could be so evocative. You are an artist. Just wanted to tell you that I lurk, and enjoy. :)
You may have been less than thrilled with the quality of this set, but I was incredibly impressed (as always). If this is substandard work for you, it's easy to see why so many call you a Master.

Thank you again for this site and all you do.
Thanks man......your work inspires me.
Thanks Mr. Motts, I worked for Wilputte Corp., the company that built coke ovens like these from 1975-1983, and saw some of them under construction and helped commision them. Now few are left around the country. Your photos are a beautiful record of what once was.
Craig, thank you for all the great information about the machinery and the coking process!
Wow... great shots even if you are not impressed with them. I live about 12 miles from this place and never even knew it, Where did you park/enter? I need to take my camera out there, and SOON!
