New Gallery, first comment.. . . I'm in heaven! Fantastic pictures, I come here every day hoping for a new gallery. The floor and stairs look a bit spongy.
What a waste of something so regal.
I second that......what a total waste of a once beautiful old building......that could've been used wisely.......shame on the City of Detroit for doing this......but most of the downtown is a waste land too.....sad .....such a waste land......I wished you could've gotten pictures of the old Hudsons building before it went to the wrecking ball.....sad I never got to go to that store when it was around either.......
No 5 second rule in this place... Sandwich down!!
It isn't only Detroit. This whole country tends to throw things away rather than fix and reuse. Eldokid, there definitely is a sog factor going on here!
lol at Lizzie
Motts what was this room used for. Thanks Motts.
What a damn shame. I assume what is on the floor is the ceiling? Must have been some serious water damage in there or something.
eldokid, me too. Think there is rehab for opacity? I'm addicted
Wow what a mess! I wouldnt want to walk in that stuff.
There was an old "insane asylum" by us that was torn down in the 80's. They built a new building onto it and then the cost of keeping up the old building became to great for the facility to bear, so they ended up tearing it down. I never got to see the old building, but from the pictures I have seen, it didn't seem to be a Kirkbride building, although it did have the central administration building and then wings on both sides. Wish I was into this stuff back then...
so sad to see it going to waste
Hey TootUncommon: I do realize that its not just Detroit. I only say that cause I live close to Detroit.(suburbs).........but not in Detroit. Of course most Cities have the same issues....it just seems that here we get lots of negative publicity in regards to the shell that the City of Detroit has become....not that its not deserved.....so I guess I'd say a shame to all Cities that just let things go.....but it seems that it will continue to happen.....but it is sad nontheless.....its just a shame really.....to not reuse old buildings for something else....its a crime really.......IMO anyway.....
this is the way i take into the MCD kinda...well i pass by those steps on the way up to the lobby. thats all thats left of them the next level of steps have caved...but the is another stairway over on your left.
Lets face it, Detroit is a failed city, and will slowly revert to a more rural state, The industry that built it, is gone, and barring some sort of massive change in this world, will never return. The only hope for cities like Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, Gary, etc, is that global warming gets severe enough that water used for manufacturing becomes a big enough issue that industries will be forced to come back to the water, as the Great Lakes have one fifth of all the world's freshwater. just my opinion.
