Chamber

Chamber

The massive waiting room, modeled after a Roman bath house. Enormous pieces of the ceiling decoration have fallen off, but most of the debris has been cleared off the floor.

A fantastic historical photograph of the room can be found here.

Amazing. . .
Reminds me of Penn Station in Baltimore.
OHMYGAWD - I LOVE the before and after shots, really makes you think. This looks like it could have been made into a library or some other kind of public place and reused.
so sorry that lovely hanging light fixture wasnt available at the time of this photo, still however a massive grand old space!
im speechless.
This reminds me of some of the great halls. It really was an elegant era.
Could be used as a opera house!!!!
Must have had stunning acoustics!
Michelangelo would have loved this place
What a gorgeous space (well, it was anyway).!
GREAT perspective!
Buildings like this can never be done today, not the same thing at all..
Time has definitely taken its toll =(
I love the before and after shots too. Id love to have seen it back then.
The before shot really puts into perspective how wasteful we are here in America. You would think that keeping the building up and re-configuring it into a purposful structure would have been cheaper than letting it go and then trying to come up with a fix.
Unfortunately peg, the funds and prospective tenants that might save this structure do not exist. It would likely cost around $400m to build such a grand structure today, and half that to restore it. No economic infrastructure exists to support it. Zombie abatement alone would be quite costly. Oops.
THEY NEED TO SAVE THIS!!!!!
Oh well can't see the before pic from work, blocked. So glad opacity's not blocked. I love checking out the great pix when it's slow here.
Great stuff!!
Dylan, U got it right
In England this would be a church and protected from further deterioration
Yeah that before pic is just amazing really. It is such a shame....awesome place......great photo Motts!!!!!
I love this shot. The vastness of the space makes you feel really small.
what a shame we let our public places get like this. the economy in michigan has gone to the potty now, too, so I don't see any way out for this beautiful old building in the future =(
I just realized that this is where the music video for "Beautiful" by Eminem was shot. Awesome, i accidently stumbled upon this building in detroit and recognized it from this site, Amazing,

Wow, what a difference. This photograph is epic.
I think the reason why it looks clean is because I heard there is a group of people trying to clean up the place and save it. Just like the good old Buffalo Terminal.
yeah they wanna make it like a homeland security/u.s. customs building or something. but once when i had been on the roof for some time, i walked into the lobby on my way out and some dude was there playing a trumpet.
Mm, I was thinking of Buffalo Terminal too. Beautiful places, both.
