wow...
horrifying. More frightening than any of the state hospitals I've seen here.
This is absolutely gruesome and is probably all that is left of those people.
How awful to think they are just sitting there
Man I came up with an idea for this stuff here. With the capability of DNA and human cloning, why don't I just take these samples and clone me a perfect boyfriend, as I can seem to never keep a boyfriend for long, would be cool to give this a try LOL.
This is unbelieveable! Why have these samples been left there? Greusome. Mr. Motts, these were from your trip in 2007, correct? I am hoping the samples were part of what was removed when you went back in 2008.....
Brain maybe?
"Parents were told that their children were being sent to "Special Sections" for children where they would receive improved care.[26] The children sent to these centres were kept for "assessment" for a few weeks and then killed by lethal injection, their deaths recorded as "pneumonia". Autopsies were usually performed, and brain samples were taken to be used for medical research." -Wikipedia
I was wondering what that was in there, and your caption gave me the shivers. The colors and the composition are very eerie.
Actually, I quite like the
'More Chunks Of Flesh' as a title
Ugh eww. I wonder how old these ones are?
So.. dang... creepy! This is insane.
This is the most disturbing gallery I've ever seen here. I don't know what else to say...........
Shawn: even if the tissue still held viable DNA that you could clone [massively unlikely], there's a HUGE chance that all you're gonna get is a big lump of cancer.

I don't get why people are so freaked out about this. Okay, so it's a bit morbid, but the people that gave the samples aren't needing those bits of flesh any more. do you start sobbing when you see an eyelash that's fallen out, or toenail clippings? it's dead, it's useless, and yeah, maybe there could be more sympathy involved in the storage, but then, the people that left them thre weren't exactly expecting a buncha people to be snooping round taking photos, were they?
I'm not freaked out by the samples themselves, or by legitimate medical useage in hospitals. I don't even mind the surgery channel, etc... Biology is fascinating. What bothers people, I think, is the fact that the whole T4 thing (which was bad enough), led to many of these "samples", coupled with the fact that what was left of those poor peoples' bodies were left to rot in an abandoned building.
I do have doubts that these samples were from T4 victims, given what I have read about the program. This institution catered to adults (as far as I know), and unlike children, they seemed to have been cremated en-masse rather than carefully dissected and examined.

Also, as Seventh has pointed out, these bottles don't seem to be very well secured and much of the formaldehyde was probably lost due to this fact - so the chance that these tissue samples date back to the 1940s is highly unlikely.

But those are just my assumptions based on what I've seen, that's all.
"...maybe there could be more sympathy involved in the storage, but then, the people that left them thre weren't exactly expecting a buncha people to be snooping round..."

The people that left them there weren't in the sympathy business at all! First of all, they MAY have been Nazis... and even if the samples aren't that old, they at the very least were doctors performing medical procedures, so sympathy or lack thereof wasn't part of the picture.

Personally, I am not emotionally moved by lifeless chunks of medically-excised flesh. Sure that's all that is left of those poor folks, but most of us will leave even less when we're gone (unless you're embalmed). The original donors of these samples are dead, gone, and it's over. Whether or not they were the T4 victims is probably moot. It actually IS an irresponsible method of storage to just leave it all lying around like that, but being as they are nothing more than medical samples, I don't view it as actually dishonoring the dead or anything.

That's just my opinion, though. I love this gallery - it's totally fascinating and by far one of Motts' more morbid efforts. Being such an incredibly huge Opacity fan, I have yet to find any of Motts' photos disappointing or offensive, though, so I guess you could say I am biased! heheh...
Creeeepy but great shots. Seeing all these...uhh...pieces...has to be very rare. Great shots, Mr. Motts :)
Really, what was going through their heads? "Well, we're shutting down the hospital." "Okay, I'll just leave these brain slices here."

Joking aside, I'm not really bothered by this aside from the horrifying lack of proper storage. I'd probably wind up stealing one of those samples...
are those pickeled,,,lol
re:Seventh

actually, YES.
Remnants of people DO skeeve me out.
I do freak out about nail clippings, eyelashes, hair...
I won't even SIT in a chair if I can feel the warmth of the person sitting there before me.
this would be the perfect place to go on Halloween
Looks like it belongs in The Addams Family basement.
Actually, I see it as a bit of immortality...being in one of Mott's galleries. Being a piece of abandoned flesh in one of these photos and having a forum discussing someone's demise....whether fair or foul, actually gives meaning to their death in some respects....it does show that someone cares about what happened to them.
beautiful..but chilling.
Katy, I agree with you.
These must be the waste left over from patients who underwent a transorbital lobotomy. I'm really shock that they were not sent to a incinerator and just left there.
What a thing to run across! Super creepy !
My guess is that these are toxicology samples. Basically the coroner cuts a chunk of flesh and skin off of a body and test it to see if there are traces of drugs or alchohol which may have contibuted to the persons death. It can also help find some diseases as well.
THIS IS JUST AMAZZZING!!!!!
An incredible set of photos, Motts. I'm in awe. I'm really interested in the historical element of this. I mean, why was it abandoned anyway in 2000? Who took away all the 'stuff' ??? and if it's abandoned, why take the stuff?????????
This is out of a horror movie!! It reminds me of witch potions for spells or The Mad scientist stuff.
Amesome work Motts!
In a transorbital lobotomy slender picks are pierced through the upper corners of the eyesat the top of the nose where the eyebrow begins by tapping at the base of the pick.
The base of the pick is then pushed down causing the front of the pick to move up into the frontal lobe behind the forehead skull.
Most specimans of this type would not be used to diagnosis contagious problems. They are used to check for tumors/drugs and other tissue level problems. This could be some pathologist's life work. These should be viewed with an eye toward discovery of the pathology of the patient. But they should have been dealt with when the place was closed. A trip to the incinerator would have taken care of this.
guitorman beat me to it. i was going to add that transorbital lobotomies dont involve the removal of any tissue.
totally unreal
please tell me you took a few of those samples
I agree with Shawn above - clone a friend, although with my luck he would be a real MUTANT
Well if this doesn't impact you, nothing will....I can't even imagine the fear many of those people felt leading up to their death...
MOTTS WE NEED TO GO ON A MISSION!!!!!!
Chunks that big probably were removed post-mortem. Also there doesn't seem to be much of the original formaldihyde in the jars so they can't be that old.
What's so disturbing about the common occurrence of excess heat energy briefly remaining on a chair seat? It's just a form of energy, not physical "matter".
EW!
too bad you didnt get some of the labels i could have my grandma translate it she is 100% full german immigrant
hitler was very big on odd medical experiments like trying to sew people together to make siamese twins actually thinking it would work.he was into the world of shall we say PT barnum oddities.he felt strongly on twins siamese monozygotic and dizygotic and the powers of twins having a bond.makes you wonder how much of that was going on at this place as well as aktion T4.was josef mengele was a resident doctor...you know the angel of death hitlers prized whackjob that torutured and mutilated many in the name of science.
Gosh what a turn on.
Eyugghh.

...Wallpaper please?
I`ve searched the whole german internet for informations about this hospital - no chance. there are no infos. really nothing. This fact makes me think that there must be a reason for that.
maybe they want to remain silent about it... Who knows?
Gosh, i really love thise page, but sometimes i could freak out about the comments. It sounds like some of you think that the Dritte Reich still exists or at least tthat this type of government was still existing in the 70, get back in historyclass. Its insulting
Motts, I hope you were wearing a respirator and a Haz-Mat suit!
