Tomb

Tomb

The crypt is now exposed to the sunlight, and dates to the mid-11th century. This tombstone is quite new as the original was badly damaged. Other stones have been removed and preserved.

I was going to be impressed at how well the tombstone had held up over the centuries, but then I re-read your comment that's it's relatively new. Still pretty damned impressive that anything is still there after all these years.
Impressive indeed... those bricks in the background were laid almost a thousand years ago. Truly amazing!!
Who had his dwelling among the tombs
The history! Truly sites like this absolutely awe me-to touch one of these stones and know it was placed by another human 1,000 years before...
I completely agree. Amazing that someone cut and placed this EXACT stone so long ago. I always wonder about the little details, like what they looked like, ate, did everyday, etc..... Fascinating stuff :-). Love the red bricks and the little specks of green.
Its nice to see that someone still cares enough for this place to replace the stones. Amazing to think that it has been around for 1000 years.
The stones made by man shall always speak of the past.
1070? Holy crap.
Wow.
Being as old as it is i'm certain whoever rests here has become a part of the earth itself. It's amazing to think that one day WE will become a part of the earth as well.
i wonder who he was.
Hirsau was one of the most important monastaries in "Germany" during medeival times. This guy was its first abbot but due to political reasons he had to leave it and settle at this site here. He died at Michealskloster and later on his burial site became a place of pilgrimmage.
Who is in there
Didn't read my post? Its the grave of the 1st abbot of the famous Hirsau monastary.
so cool :)
