Pillars

Pillars

Parts of these monastery ruins were placed in a Heidelberg museum, although most of the stone was taken down and sold in the late 1500s.

As the ruins stand today, they seem to echo the long-lost Mercury temple that once stood here.

Whoa! Now I could get into worshipping at a site like this! Makes me want to look for chicken entrails or something. Quite magnificent, both the site and the shot!
Chicken entrails??? LOL!

Great capture here Motts!
Lynne, wanna help me sacrifice a virgin instead? You find the virgin, I'll do the rest! ;)
Romans considered Wotan and Mercury to be one and the same.....

Forget chickens.....sacrifice a bull!!!
er....for the record, this is an outstanding photo.
Ummm...if this were a monestary I don't think the occupants would have been interested in a virgin...maybe a ram?
Wonderful shot!
And I believe the monastery was most likely built with, and on top of, pagan temple ruins, as many churches, monasteries, etc were.
Love the B&W on this one. Looks like the pillars are holding up the sky. Oh what I would give for a time machine to be able to see some of these places when they were occupied or in use.
I'm glade that I have no need to sacrifice animals for I was washed clean in the of the Cross.

Way cool shot Motts, So powerful the rocks of the past.
GORGEOUS shot! B & W was perfect for conveying the timelessness you've captured in this composition. Grand work, as always.
Wallpaper?! please :)
I'm in just awe in this whole set, Man! Really nice job as usual!
wow! so beautiful again i love it so much!!
Those are really neat. It's like time has stood still for all these years.
that is a really great picture.
I just adore this frame. It'd surely be a place you'd find someone like me spending hours away at.
