I'm not very insightful but I belive there the holes may have been there for ventalation? Not very good at indentifying industrius buildings....thats why I stick with the asylums! ^.^

I was thinking more along the lines that they could be chutes? I can't picture them from any other angle but from what I know or have seen, looks like chutes.. or perhaps those boxes..thingys.. rotated and seperated coal chunks? Or im just way off and wrong.
