what exactly did you see?
Your pictures sound amazing and I too would love to see them. I grew up less then a mile from Bennett and have always loved this place. It defies description. My mom worked there in the late 60's-early 70's and I am an avid collector of Bennett memorabilia. This is the first time I've seen inside this awesome building however, so much appreciation to Mr.Mott for the incredible collection of pix.

Apparently the school was not actually founded there - it was actually in Irvington NY first. For those of you a little further away - Irvington is close to NYC but probably about 50 miles south of this location.
there is a faint hope of saving the east wing, if artistic / historical voices could be
brought to bear, but i'm afraid anyone who could intervene has already been paid off on this count...
was over 15 million dollars, and that included donations from major corporations to be secured by the
founder of Friends of Halcyon Hall, who
shall remain nameless. this person
was tireless in his efforts yet was
unable to succeed in the, shall we say,
"climate" that exists in millbrook on this issue. the cost of demolition alone was
estimated at $8 million dollars, but that
probably included all that freakin stone,
which apparrently is now is "off the table"
in any current demo scenario. also alot of the cost of either demolition or
renovation is comprised of asbestos
and lead,as in containment , abatement
or removal. in any event you are looking
at, in today's numbers, millions and millions of dollar just to destroy the place. vandals could do it much cheaper,
doncha think? one thing is certain, it
will be a big fat contract for some company to demo this irreplacable
piece of history. ironically it could end up being awarded to a family business that
is descended from the original stone
masons and craftsmen who built it.
the irony is murderous....
I just can't get over how beautiful and serene it looks. It has a romantic rusticness (is that a word?) about it, the sort of place where Hemingway would work on his latest stories. Just amazing.
I heard 13 girls hung them selves their back in the day
Myriad of thanks to you all
Tudor /Queen Anne building, i've
always thought it had a real Bavarian
feel to it, the architect kinda specialized
in that look in the 1890's. technically it's
a Victorian, but the feel is really more
medieval /Germanic, especially with
the projecting eaves overhanging
everywhere.you should see it in the wintertime after a heavy snow, it is
just...magical. A blanket of snow almost
takes away the damage of the years...
temptation. It is a one of a kind.

Used to live/work there when I was a kid and wondering how big the asbestos cloud is gonna be when they waste the old place.
for room 414.
the shabbiness of it is wonderful.
i love this place.
Like the old hammer house of horror.
It is twice as creepy inside and in very bad shape. I've been to almost every somewhat safe accessible area and yes its something worth the trespassing citation if I had been caught. I heard there is now a "silent alarm" security system with motion sensors in the building so I doubt I'll be back inside anytime soon. Also with every passing year the condition of the old wooden floors gets worse, and some are VERY dangerous. The main stairwells and hallways are VERY sound however. This building is absolutely massive and would take many hours to explore it and take it all in. This place is amazing. If I ever go back I'll try to get some non-incriminating pictures of the inside and send them in.
And to "heather"- Something in a mirror? Wow thats something else! There is what appears to be a face in one of my pictures near my friend's shoulder as if a figure was behind him. We aren't sure if its a reflection or what it is, but it really does resemble a face so its plenty creepy. I also caught a lot of "orbs" (little unexplained dots of light) in many of my pictures. In the ghost hunter websites and such they are supposedly evidence of ghosts.
GOOD LUCK everyone, and don't get arrested, as the trooper HQ is only a 5 minute drive down the road!
Kind of excited; afraid to push the button.
As far as spirits and hauntings- maybe an overdose of estrogen.
i would love to transform this into like a huge house, that would be gorgeous
If you'd like to leave your e-mail address, I can give you some insight into what might be happening at Halcyon.
Halcyon Hall was the most beautiful building- it's one of the reasons I chose to go to Bennett. I'm glad to hear it's still standing and hope someone, somehow will find a way to restore it.
Does anyone have any info on the girls hanging themselves there? By the boiler room, also, I got serious bad vibes. It was a very hot day, and it felt like we walked through an air conditioner. At that point, I randomly got very nervous for no reason, and my heart started racing. Shortly after that we walked into the satanic room...

I sure as s--- would've bought that place for $100 in 1993 - and I was only 8!
I was privileged to have gone through the estate, quietly as a ghost hunter and feel it is quite haunted. Although I wound up falling through a hole in the basement (it was a strange occurance). I would go back again to complete my hunt. I found many orbs, aparations and heard old music being played. I have one photo where it appears that an aparition is walking through a wall. It was quite an experience.
I heard that a fence was put around it in Oct. or Nov of 2011 to keep people out because it is to dangerous to walk through.
cheers
The building is beyond repair, it still stands from what I can tell from googlemaps, it will either be demolished or left to continue to rot. The only hope for preserving the memory of this building is the stonework, and a modernized replica built ontop of it ( still unlikely though *sigh* ). I say modernized because the building doesn't fall into legal building codes, it is/was a fire trap ( as many old buildings are )
Entering the Buildings: Do not do it, the building of particularly interest "Halcyon Hall" is on the verge of complete collapse, every floor is a danger, good portions of roofing is missing, severe water/winter and wind damage has left this place an easy deathtrap. DO NOT ENTER IT. The Dorms building next to it also appears to be split down the middle, which indicates that the foundation has been compromised.
If you do enter these buildings, you are putting your life and other people's lives at risk, as well as the rescuers who may have to save you.
With that said, I wish I could of entered it at least once in my life, I wish I could of saved her. I wish I could save her now. ~Celeste
