whats with all the paintings?
would they be done by prisoners or just
to brighten the place up a bit
I'm guessing they were painted by the Belgian army to brighten up the rooms / morale.
It's like a strange, surreal art gallery.
Superb line-up for this shot - it just goes on and on and draws you in!
I agree with Lynnie! And Motts is that flooring wood or brick?
Wallpaper....

But I could see this as part of a screen saver.

I never get tired of looking though these.
I second the wallpaper! LOVE your endless
hallway shots!!
They do look like wooden planks, but I believe they were stone squares placed over a brick / wood / mortar foundation. If they were wood, I imagine they would have rotted out long ago with all the weather that gets in here... the entire fort was pretty solid.
As interesting as those paitings are it is strange that they are done on the wall in a prison. Nice photo though Motts.....
love how it looks never ending with the darkness waiting for you to come on in!
They have some really nice design in there.
The pictures make sense if this is a fortress. As do the super thick walls.
Agree with the surreal art gallery comment. I keep forgetting where we are!
Well, the prison was down in the basement so to speak...and i doubt it was only used as a prison. It probably served multiple functions. These upper levels obviously entertained various officers or even government officials.
