I bet this was great in its heyday
i was going to make almost the exact same comment right before i scrolled down, excellently inspiring work mr. motts.
I wonder where the rest of the stiles are.
Unusual balustrade
What's a balustrade?
banister or railing, Andy
GREAT SHOT! these really were wonderful when they were intact, like the
rest of this place. in the 1970's it was
grand. in the 1890's it was said to be like a palace
I thought a ballistrade was everything togeather, ralling, spindels and knewls
Note the patched-up cracks, this building already had structural problems before its abandonment
Interesting design.
Man, you guys should have seen it! I went there and it was great. I remember standing there and hearing that Kennedy had been shot and then going up to Yale to see my boyfriend. What a weekend. Please, any classmates???
I've gone through this gallary several times, and this picture, every time, reminds me of the movie Taps.
TRISH.
I may have been a classmate of yours. I was a freshman in 1963. My room was in the upper floor of Halcyon Hall - a very dark and grim room whose window was enclosed by outside walls on both sides, so the view was like looking down an alley.

My roommate and I had nothing in common. She was popular. I was not. I started in the foreign language, secretarial , study abroad program and quickly learned I couldn't read or write short hand or type fast and had no desire to be a secretary in Spain.

At that time, Bennett was unapologetically a "ring by spring or your money back school" for the very rich but not bright enough for seven sisters ivy league schools.

My first semester Dr. Timothy Leary had just bought the estate next door, and the faculty totally lost it. The whole student body was assembled in the auditorium and was promised instant expulsion of any student found anywhere near the Leary estate.

The faculty should have kept their mouths shut. Most Bennett students didn't know Lysergic acid from stomach acid, and issuing dire warnings about going near the Leary estate was like making a public address announcement to check the place out.

I only lasted about six weeks at Bennett. I wasn't rich or social , and I was looking for a education not a husband.
Gael,

I am younger, but found your story very interesting. It is amazing the lifestyle differences of my generation compared to yours is amazing.

I am curious what you ended up doing after leaving Bennett?

What did your life path bring you?

Did you get a "ring" even if not by spring?

For some reason I am drawn to your comment, and intrigued by your life story now.
Too bad the woodwork wasn't taken out and used
Wow the only thing that looks perseved are the stair cassess. Its a huge shame to see sutch a wonderfull school to go to wast.
I wish that thay would fix it up..
I would love to see it befor it whent to wast..
Gael or Pat...please can you tell me more about this man Tim Leary. Im reading alot about this guy from the remarks and am now fascinated by who he was. Was he the resident drugs supplier for sex. ?? what became of him?? please tell Im very interested
I found out who Tim Leary was...hehe i looked up the net...silly me! however i didnt realise he was famous. I thought he was just an ordinary teacher, at first I thought he was a jock that all the girls were after....my how my imagination ran wild....
