Courtyard

Courtyard

The courtyard formed by the general U-shape of the building. It seems the porches were walkable when it first opened... I wouldn't try it nowadays.

I love this picture, and I don't know why. The way it makes me feel it looks so lonely with so much history.
It is so sad that such a beautiful building has been left like this.
Man, this place looks sooo damn ready to collapse.
Excellent shot.. Too bad you didn't wait until dusk, would have produced a fabulous shot..
Is that a chimney? Why does it have windows??
Could be vents of some sort, Wanda.
Unbielivable!!!!
sorry for the typo
That chimney has a cap on it and probably has more than one flue. The "cap" is to keep weather and wind from downdrafting the flues.
Mr. Mott,
was that a second story 'porch' or was there no access to that part when the school was open?...can't tell if its only for fire evacuation purposes...oh to have seen this building in its hayday.
Yes I'm pretty sure that was a porch that you could hang out on, I think I remember seein an old photo of people sitting in chairs on top of this.
Just makes me wanna cry...
Look how nature has taken this place over. It's beautiful to look at, but so sad to see such an awesome old building go to waste like this!
MY FAVORITE SHOT! these balconies were indeed active lounging and recreational areas with seating and decoratve plantings....ah the mists of time..
Some of these shots just take my breath away! Oh, how I wish I could explore these places!
If those porches were indeed functionable when the school was in use, as Motts has attested to, would they have had railings around them? I can see a little bit of a railing (I think), but it doesn't look to be too high. I can't imagine feeling too safe, lounging on a second story porch with no railing, knowing that one false move would send me plummeting into the courtyard. Of course, maybe those Bennett girls were a lot more coordinated and graceful than I am, and falling off balconies wasn't an issue for them...
yes, all of the balconies had substantial
balustrades, quite beautiful. the
"spindles" are all missing from this
one, no doubt kicked out by gleeful vandals in the 90's. actually they were all
rotted out anyway, and may have been
removed as part of the onetime "too
little-too late" attempts at halting the
deterioration about a decade back.
in any event, i never heard of any girls
[or boys!] falling from Halcyon's fair
balconies! i myself have almost fallen off
it's many roofs on numerous occasions,
but that is another story....
man that is one beautiful school. can you imagine you had your little second floor balconys. to go outside and study ansdd look down onth the yard see your friends. its almost to much i really love this stuff.
have you ever been in any buildings that have aspestos?
that would be my constant fear.
P-R-E-T-T-Y COOOOOOOOOL
man you can almost hear the laughter and stuff echoing thru the yrs
awesome picture
stellar shot.
the scenery is stunning.
That is a very extensive fire escape system.
I dunno; I can't put my finger on it....
Turn of the century Chicago? Kensington(England? Phila.?)
A community on the quay in New England.
Looks like the lighting you get with a storm approaching in summer.
The firs floor, straight ahead was the dining hall. Moat of the women ate there, but it was also where they held large functions and banquets.
How beautiful.
I'll say it again--this place is MASSIVE. Wow...
would love to try
wonder where those stairs lead....
I can just see ladies sitting out on these balconies in their victorian dresses sneaking a smoke and a sip of the old demon rum! ha!
That's perfect LucieLou. Teen aged girls in the Victorian era were probably as rebellious as any. There must have been thousands of stories that went on behind those windows and on those porches. I can imagine sitting out here on a warm June evening listening to the spring frogs & crickets in the darkness. I can see fireflies in the grass & trees. I can see the brown bats flying overhead chasing mosquitoes. And in the mist of it all, the voices & laughter of young women, alive with nervous energy. It must have been magnificent.
This is SCARY.
thats such a good picture. probably my favorite on the whole site. i actually took a pic of the screen from my cell phone and set it as a wallpaper on it lol
very sad pic
How awesome is this pic??? Wow, wish I could have spent some time there in it's hayday. Wonder what it cost to stay there when it was a hotel? And, going to school there too, expensive?? Anyone know??

Love it !!
can U imagine how beautful it was in it's day even now i'ts marvelous too bad U can't get there to see it personally
