Main Hall

Main Hall

This big room still feels just like the 50's. The clock has stopped at 11:40.

Cool room. I'm surprised that the lights haven't been busted up by some dumb kids.
Another beautiful shot, and I love the details you provide.. In this case the clock.. Allows everyone to "feel" like they are there..
The clock looks like it was origionally built into the wall, then the hands where later removed and a modern clock put in their place. Its the 12 markings and the offset of the clock that bring me to this conclusion.
Nice curtains

I wonder if this was possibly a chapel? The rafters and roof supports are telltale of 50's church architecture.
No, actually the chapel is a seperate building on the college property. In fact, it's where the over zealous caretaker now lives. That's why he's so "Johnny on the Spot" whenever someone happens by for a little peek at this awesome place.
11:40... when life was at it's simplest and nothing could be finer.
I wonder if it would payoff to rebuild a place like this, and show it of as a historical venue... This is a fantastic building, it's a waste that it is getting demolished.

I believe this is the old library.
you are correct sharry, this was the library
built in the early 6o's, i believe paid for by the mother of the hitchcock twins, later the landlords of the infamous timothy leary, but that is another story...
actually this is the part of the complex
that is practically adjacent to the
caretakers residence in the old chapel.
asshead is indeed a prick beyond belief,
this may be the reason for its'
relatively undamaged condition.
the irony of chasing away us enthusiasts
is understandable but futile: clearly
No One Gives A FUCK About This Building!!!!!!
Okay, Pat, how are you affiliated with the school?

I agree with you about no one caring about the building -- but who the hell is asshead?
actually i was refering to a composiite of individuals who have angrily confronted
anyone they see attempting to look at or even photograph even the exterior of Halcyon, legally from a public road.
my affiliation with the school is complex.
i attended art programs here as a very young child. as a teen after the schoolclosed this property was my stomping grounds, a local rite of passage. i am researching the life and
work of the architect of the building. i
am descended from some of the original investors in the hotel in the 1890's, my family also having been a client of the architect in other building
ventures in millbrook. i was a charter
member of Friends of Halcyon Hall, a
preservation group that got this building
listed on the state and National Register
of Historic Places in the early 90's. i
generally just love this building, it speaks
to me as Art, just like Mott's photos...
So, Pat, you have a close connection and history with this school. You should consider yourself lucky that you got to experience being a student there. Friends of Halycon Hall -- have to look them up. It is a beautiful building and, as with all of the other treasures, is a tragedy in waiting. I can certainly understand your frustration!

Knott's Berry Farm was my stomping ground when I was a teen, but that's another can of worms.
I second Valmont's notions about the clock. I personally think it would've looked much cooler if the center of the original clock (the one that the 12 hands on the wall belonged to) hadn't been replaced with a more generic, run-of-the-mill clock. It would give the room more character and flair.

This room makes me think of the '60's, what with that funky clock and the curtains and the light fixtures. I like it. I can imagine this making one hell of a living room, if the building was to be converted into a house. All it needs is some art deco furniture and a smattering of shag carpeting, and you're good to go.

I also like how the modernistic vibe given off by the curtains and clock and such contrast so well with the more classical, tudor-style architecture of the building. Quite stylish, in an unexpected sort of way.
I bet those light fictures are very rare and impossible to find.
The light shades are very super cool.
my last name is bennett so this is VERY weird
those are some big soap dispensers.
very 50 ish style i like this room very cool man
I like the lights !!!!!
I might be wrong, but I second the opinion that this is part of the stacks and reading room of the library just off the center courtyard. My father taught here from '62-'72 and I spent many an hour in the room. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Pat R, if you see this, contact me at pj1550@hotmail.com and fill me in on the latest. Thanks.
I love this picture. It almost seems like there's construction going on. Too bad no repairs were done.
I always wonder if they, or anyone has found dead people in this type of abandoned building; yup a very morbid though and a shame as to all thats left for this construct
I was just in there a few days ago and it is cool to see that most of the damage is from the building falling apart more than being vandalized. It's an awesoome place and if there were a way to sign a waiver saying if I got hurt there and no one is responsible (but myself) I would just to go in legally.

very 50s....
Pat- It is refeshing to know that a large part of this schiool still lingers in your soul with fire and fury, never let it go. I have viewed the photos, and could not stop looking and wandering about the lives this school has touched. I too love old buildings. I was born and raised in Kansas. I am fixated with old ghost towns, and schools in the area. I am currently painting the old Liberal high school which opened in 1921 and closed in 1982. Many of my friends attended school there, so I am giving them a gift by painting this building as a reminder of the good times.
The Bennett school for girls is truly beautiful, I wish that it could be restored. I would certainly donate.
I went to the bennet school for girls. After trying to find it for an hour and a half, I finally found it. I was so fascinated by this building. And now I am compelled to walk these grounds. I need to know how these people got such good pictures! I would love to get pictures. I'm way too obsessed with this building.
11:40....isn't that the same time that Titanic sank?
I love the light fixtures, and the clock.
