A Warm Place

A Warm Place

Many of the fireplaces were sealed off, perhaps to save on heating costs, but the decor was left alone.

Brr...! Actually... This just reminded me of a dream I had a long time ago, as a child. Thank you, Motts.
SAD! No people left to warm!
Cool! Is it made of marble? It sure looks like it.
it does look to be made of marble....it looks untouched by time like everything else around it
Wow.
Reminds me of Beetlejuice for some reason.
The moss on the mantle is a nice detail.
It's such a tiny fireplace. By todays standards this would be considered a space heater.
It remains me Silent hill The Room Game. I love those games :D Your pictures are so beautiful! (Sorry my bad english)
What an odd place for a fireplace! It looks kind of like its in a corner. Well, I guess without furnaces at the time, you needed to put fireplaces wherever you could.
Santa Claus would have a little trouble with this one.....

Maybe the Grinch filled it in.

(Sorry it's getting close to Christmas)
There's something really sad and FINAL about walled-in, or otherwise permanently blocked-off fireplaces, windows, doorways, etc.....kind of like a back-of-the-mind narrator is saying, "People once used this spot in their everyday lives, and NEVER AGAIN will a person, light, or even AIR pass through. Past days are irretrievable." I always want to "unblock" things (especially windows and doors) just to see the exact, long-lost sunlight pattern would have been. I know, strange idea, but....
always wondered why someone would block a fireplace. Its nice they left the mantle alone
It is a mess in there isn't it....but it has been left alone for sometime now....interesting photo Motts....
ashes to ashes and dust to dust...
like my heart
I wonder how long it's been since a fire burned there.
There must be a bad leak there as the walls around the fire place are crumbling badlly. I wonder what it looked like years ago
Narrow like the halls.
I've been away for a while and boy do i have a lot to catch up on! hehe.... i absolutely love this one, especially the moss ontop. You know i love the ones where the earth is taking back her space, lol
did not notice the moss on top.
thanx
Cosy :)

In russian it sounds - Уютно
Motts, perhaps to help clear you up on the fireplaces and I say perhaps because I am not sure if it is the same in Belgium as it is in Paris or even if it is the case at all. IIRC, older buildings have there fireplaces sealed because there are laws governing buildings having open flames in the city. I am basing this on the fact that when I was living in Paris I decided to do some grilling on my balcony and the cacophony of people telling me from the neighbors telling me to stop echoed throughout the courtyard long after I had went to bed. Found out later that this was done because (in part at least) illegal immigrants have done stuff like using hotplates and wound up being stuck in an inferno because the building is perhaps close to if not over 100 years old.
