Imagine how packed it was when 8000+ PTs were there.
Wow. I can see it's not the same view as the B&W ward in the "home" page for this ward, but was it the same ward, looking the other direction? Also, are all those aqua colored things on the walls radiators? If not, what are they? Thanks for the new gallery :-).
I think the ceiling is rather low. Wouldn't that make for bad ventilation for so many people?
I dont think he ceiling is low, the windows are just big.
Beds as far as the eye can see, despair piled up to the ceiling, big windows that let in the sun but don't let out the depression, no such thing as privacy...misery loves company...but these people would have preferred not to have the misery.
the roof isnt low,
im guessing
it was a wide angle lens that Motts used?
makes it look closed in.
Its what you would see if you could look into my head.
I doubt all 8000 patients were in there at the same time.....that'd be a bit cramped! They'd probably just come in 2000 at a time... ; )
Excellent photo, love the rotting ceiling.
I can image what it smelled like now. Imagine all those people crowded in there on a hot summer day. EWWWWWWWW!
Yeah all those windows wow....no privacy thats for sure. That wouldn't be fun at all. Its interesting to see there are 2 shades left on any of those windows at all? Nice pic Motts!!
Maybe it was nice being there. At least they had pleny of heat, light and nice views
Spectacular.
ceilings are high....10 feet or more....
good place to play checkers
whenever I see places like this I always try to imagine what it must have been like when it was alive with people. As always, great work Motts!
Nice shot, Motts!
was in there last night creepy
Grand in its' day.
Motts says this was like... one of 20 wards. So not all 8000 would be in here. Although the idea of more than 100 living in here is still pretty hairy.
Ok lets get real - This was only one of many buildings therefore it in itself did not house 8000 pts. Just under a 1000 is what the current Shapiro Developmental Center in Kankakee houses in even less buildings that have been renovated to now have bedrooms. What you are looking at was one of the dormatory wings and these buildings were easily renovated to have bedrooms in them now that are quite spacious. Beds were lined up on the wings for the patients to sleep and then in the center of the H shape was the "Day Room."
