Oh that is beautiful and so serene..... I'd love to see this in all it's colours!
Guess they didn't believe in being comfortable, though
I'll bet that when the place was still in use, there were cushions on those benches.
One would sincerely hope so.
This was a school. They may have thought that sitting on cement blocks was good for your posture.
you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have.....A SPOOKY ASS SCHOOL!
hey, this WAS a weird school- it was like a finishing school for girls who were'nt
necessarily going to finish anything...
they had names like Buffy and Muffy and
Winky, and all universally had very long straight blonde hair, at least the ones who taught me when i was 4. half of the
grad students were all former girlfriends of
timothy leary. i loved them all.
Except for myself and a few other cousins who were also born too late, all of the women in my mom's family attended Bennet at some point from the '50s through the '70s (my mom actually attended Bennet with her own niece who was barely a week younger). I think Pat Ratchet was quite right: from what I've been told, it was very much a "Mona Lisa Smile," Buffy/Muffy/Cookie sort of school for affluent girls to learn how to land equally affluent husbands. But I'll have you know that the women in my family have dark hair, not blonde! I don't know if they ever had flings with Timothy Leary, but for humor's sake, I certainly hope so.
Say, Mandy, I was one of 5 on full-scholarship. Three African-Americans from Poughkeepsie; a girl from Ecuador, and me. And I was only one of about 8 from public school (those three from Poughkeepsie, me and a few others). Bennett trained for more than getting an affluent husband. They had an outstanding music program and as Pat mentions the early education program. They also had the only bi-lingual secretarial program. They were training ladies to move on in life. Either marriage and family; careers; further education. Too bad, too sad. None of my friends at Bennett were "teepical Bennett girl". It's a big mistake to generalize.
What a cute little window bench. It doesn't look too comfortable, but it's a nice idea. I bet the girls would sit here and study. That's what I would've done.
Actually, Amy, it's where we curled up to read our mail!
Oh, yeah..and the bench was upholstered with deep cushions.
i bet that bench doubled as a lost n found like it did at my school
So chalet.

I have blonde hair.
What a waste of beauty and relaxtion! Such a shame!
This must have been a wonderful room. Love the black and white.
Symmetry to perfection...
I spent many happy hours sitting in the window!
What a neat little nook to lose one's self in studying, reading mail, or just daydreaming while watching the snow fall.
I wonder how many young women sat here, lost in though, looking out this window? Her first time away from home, she missed her family and especially a special boyfriend she left behind in a far away town. She dreams and plans her future from this spot, a "springboard" of sorts, of a future life that will be full of twists and turns, joys and sorrows, laughter and tears. Now, a century later, the girl lived her life and is forever gone. The future has given way to the past. How her life unfolded is unknown. All that remains is this special springboard where it all started. May she, and Bennett School for Girls, rest in peace.
the building es muerto
This is so simple. I can almost see a young girl sitting with a book in her hand lazily gazing out while she day dreams. Spectacular photograph Motts. So elegant in its simplicity. C:
Motts has done it again !
This photograph has the look of complete surrealism !
