Stairwell

To me, the central staircase was the most prominent feature left here - its curvature, layout and style were quite unique. It had become a nesting ground for pigeons.

I love old staircases wood or iron. There always so lavish.
I hate those flying rats! they make a mess of everything
I AM WONDERING HOW THE CLOCK TOWER LOOKS LIKE FROM THE INSIDE.
This staircase is almost beautiful in its dinginess.
Nice lighting and shadow play with this one
Woah.. look at that layer of dust on the railing. Wouldn't be running my hand down that any time soon..
this picture is just so... so... wow! i <3 it! =D
I would love to see a movie done in this place!
Agree
The Grudge anyone? Or how about The Exorcist when Linda Blair was doing the stair walk. :-)
Wow. Love the unusual curves! Needs a tiny bit of elbow grease and a quick touch-up of the paint , though. Maybe an hour or two of work in an afternoon?....;-). Anyway, it still kind of makes my stomach lurch to see such beautiful work charred and blackened. Such a waste :-(.
Pigeons and Nosferatu?
ari,
i believe that is pigeon poop on the railing, not dust!
-mink-
my house was made in 1909, the one thing that sold me about the house....the staircase. LOVE OLD STAIRCASES!
GOOD EVENING! WELCOME TO MY CASTLE OF HOME! EH! HEH,HEH,HEH!!!
Scary, I beleive they were going to film a movie here. I read recently that Martin Scorcesse was hoping to set a film with DiCaprio and others at this location. But, since the building is getting the axe (regrettably) Martin and company couldn't film there. Shame
The dread Priests ascend this stair, howling praises with mouths seared shut and eyes long burned away by the most dire of revelations.
I spoke too soon... brilliant shot! I LOVE IT!
I really love old staircases, this one is beautiful. Pigeon Poo Heaven I'm sure!
is it just me , or does it look like a lady wearing an old ballroom dress at the top of the stairs?
this is beautiful .
i can just see someone throwing themselves down this , its scary .
A nesting ground for pigeons and their disease, I'm sure. Great shot.

I wonder how many patients tumbled down or were pushed down these stairs.
probly none... why would they be?
in other words, the staircase was covered in Pigeon crap ;-)
WOW
this picture makes me feel chlostraphobic... which makes for a good effect haha

Oh, btw I also go by E.A. Poe so if you see a comment by E.A. Poe, it's just me.
those pidgeons will go blind
that looks almost like home
Is this in the clock tower???? I really need to know Mr. Motts!!!!!
i will never ever go up in there by myself! EVER!
Esher comes to mind.... Labyrinth.
yhose stairs look scary
Is this the stairway that leads to the clock tower itself? I wonder if anyone has ever been up there all the way to the top and can describe what it's like up there? I know the clock is a Seth Thomas, and there's also an 800 pound bell as well, which they used to ring every half hour to signal the time to those working in the fields surrounding the asylum, and so they would know when to come in for meals. I'll bet it's extremely hot, dusty, and possibly unstable up top. Not to mention dangerous and dark, with many ledges and dark corners.
