what building was this?
That's the infirmary building. Notice the burned roof? It's right across from maintenance and has the old dentist's office in it.
Nice to see a photo of something without a mess of graffiti! Thanks Motts
Radical Ed~my grandparents used to live back on Townsend Rd from about 1972 to 1997. It was right by E-1. My grandpop had a shop and 2 houses back there, til they started buliding the industrial park around them. The road was real narrow and overgrown w/ weeds and cornfields. We used to play in E-1. But, up on one of the top floors, there was a massive hole that went down to what looked to be a basement. It scared the shit outta me. We used to find alot of dead animals and hear chanting and screaming from the people that hung out there at night. Dozens upon dozens of huge fires there too within those years. Was E-1 the main building over there?? Now, I think it's some sort of administration bldg or credit union. Is there anything left of the 'E' bldgs now?
Hmm that looks awesome. I love how vines eat building its amazing
ive been in every part of the building
That building Rye? Which building is it? Have you been to the other twenty-three buildings??
Had this pic on my desktop. My dad recognized the building and became obsessed with your site. He and my mother used to work there - met there in fact. He was an OT. Shared a lot of stories...but he is very nostalgic of your pictures and almost cried when he saw how bad a lot of the buildings were.
Coplan, your folks should tell us about some of their more "memorable" experiences working at PSH.
My father worked in the OT unit...which used to be some sort of cafeteria or something? Not sure. Anyhow...he didn't really have an office, he worked in a nursing station cage at the end of the hallway. Because of the nature of his work, he was often working late hours at night...and he talked about how creepy it was even then. He's not one to believe in the paranormal, but he used to talk about all these feelings he'd get and the things he heard. For example, his "office" was at the end of a really long hallway. He heard footsteps coming up to him like mens shoes on tile. But when he turned around, the footsteps stopped, and no one was there. To this day, he still claims it wasn't a "haunting" per-se, but just the building playing tricks on his mind.

My mother, unfortunately, has passed on, so I can't relate any stories about her experiences. I know that she used to work in the minimum security womens building. When she was pregnant with my older brother, she took some of her patiences out for a walk. One of her patients apparently jumped on the railroad tracks (I think this was in a subway) trying to find the third rail and get electricuted. My mother claims she got into psychology because she always thought she might be crazy. After some of her patients, she reasurred herself that she was quite sane.

I'll try to get more info out of my father for you. I'm trying to get him to go down there with me one day. Maybe find his old office.
Coplan, if you need a guide, I'll take you two through. Email me at radical_ed@yahoo.com if you want to chat about Byberry.
When and how exactly did the infirmary roof get burned off?
About seven years ago by vandals.
I'm into psychology, and I hope that I don't find a mental hospital like this when trying to find work. I don't like any of the things that went on in Byberry. I hope to prevent all that when I finally become a psychologist.
no no. it is Pennsylvania State Hopital(Byberry). I live right near it. It is so creepy. My friends want to go in there. no way Am I. You can get cancer from asbestoes i think thats how you spell it. They are making fun of me and my other friend for it. Hey, atleast I'm not risking my life for a 10 minute walk through an abandoned building.
vandals have destroyed this place and it is a shame. Architecture and workmanship like this is no longer found. Too bad. It would have made a great tourist attraction. Damn kids.
The jungle always takes over eventually.

and liek i have heard stories about it taht reaked me out
They did tear it down, in 2006-2007.
Are there any remaining buildings?
No, nothing is left.
Now! Maybe you could help me out. I'm trying to find infomation on byberry hospital, where could I go to find documents on the patients? We just found out that our great grandmother was there, and passed away there. any info will be good info, please feel free to contract me @ angleeyez91@aol.com.
I had an uncle who was an inpatient here. He did not, as far as I know, have any mental problems. He was deaf and dumb and nobody in the family could or would take care of him, so he ended up at Byberry! Never met or knew him; I was 6 or 7 when he was in there, this was the late forties, early fifties. My mother use to visit him and he would get real emotional. My mom was the only family member he would communicate with. All I really remember was that fact and that my mom was very depressed after she visited him. I was amazed at the size of the place.

Question: What is the first letter of the word "abandoned?"
