what an empty floor
what're all the bars up there for?
I think there used to be a cart with wheels that ran on tracks to transport supplies (books, mail, etc) along the upper floors. I'm guessing the bars had something to do with this, but I'm not sure.

Shaun has a nice photo of the cart here: http://www.oboylephoto.com/esp/esp_013.jpg
I toured a prison out west that had the same bars but there they said it was to detour suicides and pushing.
That makes more sense, thanks!
yeah i was thinking the same thing. i would think they were put there to prevnet suicides and 'accidental' deaths among inmates
All the bent bard.. wonder how many got flipped over onto them??
Did you stand on something to take the shot?
I think it was a staircase...
IIRC the history I read about this place, the grating was indeed added to prevent the prisoners from throwing each other off the balconies. Don't mess with Mugsey! 8^O
I think 2nd tiers were added later.
im trying to see the shadow man that the ghost hunters caught on film here in this shot.
it was a stairase. there is one at the other end of the hall.
did they have monkeys in there?
The bars were to prevent prisoners from pushing guards over, a common occurrence.
is the best place to go for hallween
I just love this photo is reminds me of something very HOTT
From my understanding, prisoners were able to fit their arms through the doors enough to push the guards, the space between cell doors and the railing was verysmall, and the bars were there to prevent the guards from falling to their death in the event they were pushed.
MY DAD IS A RETIRED CORRECTION OFFICER,HE WAS AT ALOT OF PLACES THEN RETIRED IN ELLENVILE{WILL NOT DISCLOSE THE NAME OF THE FACILITY} AND BARS WERE PUT UP LIKE IN THIS PICTURE BECAUSE OF OFFICERS BEING PUSHED TO THERE DEATHS BY INMATES..IMAGINE?GOING TO WORK ONE DAY THEN NEVER RETURNING HOME,SAD,WHAT A WAY TO DIE!! MY DAD MET ALOT OF FAMOUS PEOPLE WHEN HE WORKED AT THESE PLACES ESPECIALLY ALOT OF MOBSTERS.
