Cell Block 15 (Death Row)

Cell Block 15 (Death Row)

Below is a photo of Cell Block 15 circa 1960. Most of the bars were cut out after Eastern State was abandoned.

looks weird without the bars, like beach huts or something
Why would they bother cutting the bars out?
I was thinking the same thing about the bars...but they are steel so recycling them into something else would be my guess being back in steel country.
did you see the actual death chamber? What did they use back then? Injection? How about the good ol' fashioned firing squad? hahaha
No I didn't see the death chamber; I'm not sure how people were executed here. They might have been sent to a different facility for that.
Cutting out the bars before closing the prison was considered, but ultimately deemed a bad idea.
at first i thought it was like shower rooms like at a gym or beach.
...OK, I can't resist.."the original Green Mile" :-)
During its period of actual abandonment, (oh,say 1960's,1970's/80's)people climbed trees in back of the prison(Brown st.)to get over the wall and climb down trees inside the prison yard to get inside(they must have had a blast)Things were stolen ,such as metal,of course, but they also stole-can you believe it!-the oak doors on individual cells. Now these doors were small, with a high step to make it hard to attack the guards when exiting the cell.
The prison is bounded by 21st st. on the left,22nd st. on the right,Fairmount ave at the front (only)gate, and Brown st. in the back.
I'll repeat : I don't think anyone was executed here.
From which there may be no return....
Speachless.
Weird how they would cut out the bars, but not the beds, and some other things they have left behind here..
the bars are gone it's not the same without them

Makes you think and wonder what they were thinking being on death row?
Death row?...that means these are the cells where the people went b4 they were put to death, right?
ohh DEATH ROW sounds scary NOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO ONE REALLY KNOWS WHAT WENT ON HERE BUT IAM 100 PERCENT SURE ALOT OF DEATHS OCCURED HERE AND IAM SURE IT WAS NOT A PLEASANT SIGHT.
Hi Deb I was at Eastern State Penitentiary on Saturday morning it was so cool
"Cellblock Fifteen opened in April 1959, replacing Cellblock Thirteen as the maximum security block. Extending from the end of Cellblock Two, Cellblock Fifteen had 17 cells on each of its two floors. This block became known as "Death Row" when men with death sentences were placed here between 1959 and 1961; however, there were never any executions at Eastern."
