Wow! Been a while since THOSE doors have been closed (or all the way open). Joe: Maybe powdered plaster and debris from the collapsed ceiling? Does look like sand. Wonder what the original floor looked like...:-)

That "sand" is a mixture from the plaster from the walls, dirt and decayed masonry.
