Rusting Casket

A solitary casket remained in a corner of the pitch black vault. It was no ordinary casket however; it was made of steel, and had eighteen or so clamps on the lid.

It appeared to be a special container for bodies that were to be stored for a long period of time, or perhaps infected with a contagious disease - it had the ability to be sealed without contaminating the vault air, and was impervious to seepage.

I sure as hell wouldn't touch that casket. Even though my curiousity would tell me to open it up
I would like to knock on it. Course if it knocked back I would run so fast that I'd probably brake the sound barrier.
Wonder what diseases you would catch if you opened it.
That is one hell of a Pandora's box there!
Let's see, a deserted churchyard, an empty chapel, and an impregnable steel casket with 18 clamps left all by itself. Yeah, I don't think I want to know what's in there!
I'd go find it... but not without a silver stake, a garlic necklace, and a huge-ass crucifix.
Well... Did you open it?
Did you find out if there were any prizes in that crackerjack box?
A+++++ for the colors and lighting!
Awesome shot, really like the lighting.
THE ASSUMPTION OF WHATS IN THE CASKET IS MORE THAN LIKELY TO BE EMPTY. iF THAT IS NOT THE CASE, THEN IF THERE IS OR WAS AN INFECTED BODY LET IT THEN REMAIN SEALED.
My ears hurt.....

Looks like something right out of return of the living dead, not sure if I could resist just one little peek.....
What Vastarien said, I'm seconding, thirding and agreeing to it. Big time.

Oh and, one word--wallpaper!
I'm seconding Lynnie, I LOVE the colour and light in this one, perfect shot Motts!
I would call Hazmat if i found that you don't know what kinda of age old virus you could release by opening that casket.
If any kind of infection or disease were left over, it would be long dead by now.
i would have to peek , disease couldnt live in a dead body could it? there sould be a mummy inside, lol
Motts, did you find out what was in there, or did you just leave it alone?
Was anyone home?
RUST IN PEACE!!! Hehe. I always wanted to say that
Okay...the above comment FTW!!!
Good place to stash a body I suppose..
As my favorite wrestler, The Undertaker would say....REST IN PEACE.

Ozzy says...... DARKNESS IS YOUR FRIEND!
I don't want to know what they kept in there. The colors and textures of this shot are just fabulous!
i wonder what is in there, didja open it?
Perhaps a "Gimp" is in there with a rubber ball in his mouth?

"Bring out the Gimp!"
id have to open it just out of curiosity
What an amazing find.
Now I NEED to know what is inside!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My my, look at all the comments. There's MONSTERS in there. It needs to be opened to let the monsters and ghouls out!
I thought certain decease's and viruses could stay dormant for years under the correct codition's. Maybe that type of casket was required during the TB outbreaks in the early 1900's or when a body was deseased.
I gotta say If I had an environmental suit my curiosity would get the better of me and I would opening that sucker in a heart beat.
It is amazing to me how you find these things. How very fortunate you are to find and explore such places.
MMMMMM Cholera! Consumption? Hmmm... what other bad diseases can be thought of...?

WALLPAPER!!! :)
i too want to know if it was occupied. And, the fact that it is rusted doesnt sit well with me either.... i mean if something bad was in there..... and it rusts, and falls apart..... kind of scary!
Absolutely stunning. I don't know about you, but I would be scared to even be near that thing!
Second comment was epic.
those were designed to only be opened from the outside so in case a disaster happened that causes the dead to become zombies, they wouldn't be able to escape
You can never tell with these things .....

Willo are you dressed to go for a little ride?
I would open it for sure - the unknown is just too tempting. Imagine if it was something amazing in there - or something scary! Fantastic! I'm really jealous - I'd love to visit this place!
Vastarien, Would you agree this would make a good book ?
What a great shot and unique find! Bravo Motts, bravo! Given the crapload of legal trouble you can get in for leaving somone's remains in something like this and it not being properly buried/entombed, I'm certain that no one is home. My guess: that casket was defective in some way and so it was left behind. It might also be a steel vault that a casket might have been put into pre-interment. It's hard to make out the dimensions of the thing.
Let me out of here!!
From the discoloration and the floor and brick behind it.. could it have been an old fashioned, creamation casket? One that they could do a casket side service by while the remains were becoming ash?
Just a guess......
That thing would definitely be the end of that tour for me.
Sealed coffins are pretty much industry standard. They don't all have outwardly visible clamps, but it is very common for them to be sealed and leakproof. However, decomp causes a kind of fermentation which will eventually rupture any sealed coffin, so I doubt this was used for storage. More likely it's just an unused leftover.
it haunts me to think of the souls left to sleep forever in death in a steel bed like this....
There were no body's in there.
Thats where the crip keeper kept his ice cold Beer!
Thats' really rather nice.
I would open it anyday
I'd open it - I think anything contagious would be long dead without its live host. Besides, even if there were something (somehow) still contagious, chances are it could be treated these days (if you're not already vaccinated against it)
Obviously it's for the internment of a vampire. Der! ;-)
This is definatly a wallpaper. I'm jealous now Motts You get to see all these amazing things. I want to touch it. I'll pay you 50 bucks to go back and open it.
If the Chapel is restore (I hope, I hope, I hope), then there would have to be an examination of this caske tand any contents.

That would recquire a HAZMAT crew and the state & county Medical Examiners Offices.
one word: Hoffa
My bed is better. Lot more comfy. Granted it's made out of wood but the design on the lid is pretty darn cool.
What a neat old Bobsled, someone should restore it and find a nice, big, snow covered hill to ride it down. A little paint, a headlamp, and a soap dispenser is all it really needs.
ok, still waiting for Motts answer......." tapps on desk wtih nails"
Nah, no one was in there :-)
i wouldnt thik that anyone would be in it. if so it wouldnt have been left there
i would love to know whats in there, i can't stop thinking about it!!
It's dracula's bed!
I might of crawled in
Very amazing pic, I love this one.

(Since diseases don't last very long at all and this was clearly abandoned a long time ago, I wouldn't worry about disease at all...except maybe tetanus from scraping oneself on a hinge :) And people usually don't just leave bodies around. However, I'd like to think that a vampire is in there, just the same...)
WOW! you jus gotta open that thing, no ifs, no buts, jus do it. If it was meant to be hidden forever, you wouldnt have found it! It wont contain a body, jus afterfacts! maybe it the first time vault!
WOW! you jus gotta open that thing, no ifs, no buts, jus do it. If it was meant to be hidden forever, you wouldnt have found it! It wont contain a body, jus arterfacts! maybe it the first ever time vault!
*Knock, knock, knock*...."Excuse me! Um...Did you happen to die of an infectious disease......NO, you say? Great! I'm coming in..."
This has all the making of a potential SCI FI channel original zombie movie!
might be some jewrly inside
...it's jimmy hoffa

this is certainly a provocative picture -- look at all the comments it' inspired. great job!
The first thing I thought of was Dracula. There's the sensible part of me that wouldn't go near that casket. And then there's the overly curious part that would want to know if there was someone still in there.
I would be more worried about some flesh eating desease escaping. And I doubt that there is any treasure in there
I agree with the others, it is Hoffa.
hehe dont open it, the black plague might come back!
I came across this site by learning more about padded rooms & reasons behind them and have spent the last 2 hrs looking over all these photos, This photo I had to comment on, if this is a place which has not been used for many of years has no one come to open this casket? surely kids are local & are dared to open this, i know if i lived nearby my friends would of dared me or another to open this and see whats inside. its an amazing photo. can't wait to spend next 2 hours looking through more photos
Whop would want to be buried in there and why is there a ring aroung it?
Sorry, first words meant to be 'who'
Amazing one of a kind photo. I am a very curious person who loves exploring places too. In the process I've opened many things I probably shouldn't have but I wouldn't open that thing up for a mint full of money!
Makes the imagination run wild.
it's great
maybe i will be in
