now there is no need for all of that
it looks like there is a face on the right hand side by the door.....freaky!
nice group shot prolly my favorite room in the berry
probly just some body running fast paula, but it does look like a ghost
That's just Lanky...
byberry would look freaky as shit if there were no tags at all and if it wasnt damaged that much
ehh i agree cause it'd be collapsing and all that ...
There sure are a lot of Amie's out there, huh? Either that or one very BORED Amie.
All this vandalism is unnecessary. It certainly detracts from all of the surroundings.
This is one of the smaller auditoriums. There were quite a few. The biggest, Fury Ellis Auditorium held nearly 300 people. Byberry had churches, a temple, indoor pools. The tunnels went from Near Somerton, at Philmont avenue to Franklin Mills mall. From Nabisco to the Hilton Hotel. Old patients used to escape and live in there, Some died in there. There are things you don't know. Please be careful
i really hate Graffitti artists somtimes.
CM~please stop w/ all that whining! It is what it is! It's been like this for decades! Why bitch about it now? If it bothers u so much, why don't you grow some balls and go in and paint over it!?
Byberry hasn't been closed down "for decades". Bob Casey initiated its' closing in 1987 and it officially shut its' doors in 1990.
All the people I know that have been going there for atleast a decade tell me that vandalism started picking up sometime after 2001.
Nevertheless, thank god Motts changes the names of the locations on this site so these tools don't do to 150 year old kirkbrides what they've done to Byberry.
the funny thing.. one of my friends and I were talking about how shitty the grafetti in Byberry is.
You would think after all these years of practicing they would atleast develop SOME talent.
may I add.. I was in a TB hospital abandoned since 1976 that had damn near no vandalism.
Only three buildings were in use by 1990. The rest were closed periodically throughout the last twenty years. When I first went to byberry, back in 1982, there were over a dozen abandoned buildings on the opposite side of the boulevard that the current complex is located. Those were the "E" buildings. There were also a grouping of buildings behind the "Self Help" building called the "S" buildings. There were demolished in th 70's. What's left is maybe 60% of what *used to be*.
The graffiti in here has been pretty bad since the first time I went in around 97...

As I recall this picture was the result of a "who can put their name in the most places"game. The yuppie larva were chased off by "spooky trench coat kids" shortly after ;)
Yuppie larva and spooky trench coat kids almost too funny!

If ever I name a band it would be that.
I would say 'AMIE' ran out of paint by the time they reached the back row.
Amie seems to be the only female name in the room. I wonder how many cute suburban teeange girls had a night of utter hell in that place after being led in by the scum that hangs there.
Scum? Amie knows the place better than I do!
Actually, I know a lot of good people that hang there that would defend a woman's honor at any cost. Don't talk out of your ass if you don't know what's going on, dude.
But, Mr. Radical Ed, sir, if he actually /knew/ what the heck he was talking about it wouldn't be half as entertaining for him as what he imagines goes on in there. Some have photographic minds ... he's got a pornographic one. Either that or he watched "Clockwork Orange" one too many times.
Yeah whatever... I can see that most of the rooms there are set up to make the weekly Scrabble game more interesting.

I can also see in the artwork what classy upstanding people grace the halls. I would def allow them to watch over my little girl for a night of wholesome fun in byberry.

BTW - I went to Washington HS. I know enough about it.
I would love to have you guys meet up with Officer McG just to talk about some of the stuff that comes through the 7th that does not make the news. Before you proclaimed you and your flashlight experts. This was just an abandond building.
Actually, I've played checkers there before. Just last weekend a friend and I set up a DVD player (flip-top) and watched Bumfights II while having a few beers. We've all experienced Officer McGrath and he's a really good guy. Unless hoodlum scum do this raping and pillaging during the week, and in the daytime, nothing that we know of goes on there that would endanger the female species. In fact, they're pretty fucking dangerous themselves! It takes a nutty dame to hang out at the Berry.
BTW, I went to Washington HS too, graduated in 1986, and took loads of people through Byberry, much to their infintesimal delight. You're right, it'sjust an abandoned building.
speaking of graffitti Radical Ed......

: )
It felt quite strange to stumble across this.
Lots of young women go to the Berry. How bout Sassy, Violent Kitty, Spirit, Shanna, and Mustang Sally. Snapper is also a woman. Amie is only one of many female explorers to walk the dark places. I respect and protect all of them.
radical ed i heard that they are tearing down byberry n putting in row homes for old ass people? is this true. all i wanna know is are they going to tear it down in the next 2 years?

p.s. have u ever got caught by security there
Timmers, security doesn't go in the buildings ever, and the Philadelphia Police seldom do either. They will if taunted or provoked, but for the most part they don't. If you read Motts intro-story, the Police spotted us on our visit but failed to pursue us.
holy shit that sucks!!! i freaken hate old peoplenow. well ed n others i have a destination to go on for my first n probably last trip to byberry.

keepen it real
is there any cool spots or rooms that i have to see.
if so witch ones
My mother is getting older, timmers. How do you personally expect to defeat the aging process? Someday in the distant future, I hope you remember the asinine comments you just made.
Motts REALLY needs to take a farewell trip to the 'Berry.
So many places so little time...
So many other places aren't being torn down in a couple weeks..
Only four really old asylums in MA... :-)
Question... When was the power plant torn down??
The main power plant next to Self-Help went down in the late-eighties. A smaller one behind old-maintenance went down about six years ago.
its way better in person for yous who havent been there
I haven't been to 'Berry, but would love to.
"One nutty dame", huh? Well, I am a "dame" myself, nutty too, and I plan on going there in the near future. Some way, somehow, I will.
what building is this in??????
W-3
Why the hell would someone tag every seat? That's just stupid. Should have left it alone...:(
Although friends of mine did it, I agree wholeheartedly.
i just wish some of the graff was decent (don't get me wrong, i was digging ed's stuff)...but all the plain text handstyles just aren't cutting it
cheech and crips? ha, i dig this pic
i was in this room in 1992 late night
Yup, Randar, that was me.
No, I'm kidding, I live in Canada.
Captain HOWDY? Like... from The Exorcist?

Sweet.
It looks like they were playing a game of squares. But instead of putting your initials in the square you put your name on the chair.
Would the real Amie please stand up, I repeat, would the real Amie please stand up.
great, amie, great. you ruined it.
Wow, spray paint on some old shitty chairs really generates alot of hype. And shut up, its been ruined for 10 years.... Anyway, Radical Ed!!!! OMG!! I haven't talked to you in forever! But I think I may want to go to there one last time before its completely gone, & my brother too! So hit us up! My AIM doesn't work but look us up on Myspace or get one of our numbers from somebody... Hope to hear from ya!
i see they gave "assigned" seating
no lie, it looks like my school, but mine has stairs
this is just tacky and depressing
...that's because there IS in fact a person at the right side of the door?
the tags ruin this building worse than any fire could...i read the comment from an ex employee and they mentioned some patients that escaped into the tunnels and lived in them and that some of them died in them...does that mean that a body or two could potentially still be there?
Does amie have amnesia because she sure does like to write her name alot, maybe in case she forgets what her name is
I like the chairs...its so...I don't know.
