Pitfall

In front of the altar was the shaft that brought the casket up and down from the public area. The control handle can be seen in the top right corner of the structure.

I love how the light seems to reseed into the darkness of the void.

This would have been really cool in B&W.
That's funny Alexis! I can just imagine a free fall downwards for some reason.
Rather ominous, considering it's purpose.
Two words, folks:

Steep. Drop.
Wow, that's a good way to do it!
Spooky....Love it!
I hope no animals fell down there.
Motts did you see how far down it went.
I'm surprised they took time to board the windows but not cover this pit.
very cool
What a last ride that would be. Great photo!
That drop looks like it goes on forever! *shudder*
Were these standard in churches from that time? I've never seen one in a church before...
Was it a liitle unnerving to stand around it without any rails or anything? great shot motts!
that is a creepy but amazing shot all at once, I have never seen anything like that before in a church. Mr. Motts did you go down there to see if there were tunnels or anything like that?
It goes to the basement, see the next picture.
What was that used for?
awesome
Awesome and creepy..
you should have tested it if still worked :)
hmmm yes Liedown in it .. hehe
Welcome to the Pit of Despair......
Thats just eerie. The decaying yellow color doesn't make it any better either.
...and here comes Johnny Depp
"So, you don't want to believe what we believe, eh. BEHOLD, the gate to hell. Off with you sinner! It is gods will, not mine!" (*push*)
Wow.
I've never seen anything like that before.
Specialized chaple.
what's a pitfall? what was it for?
Maxwell Coffee anyone?
Something about this picture isn't quite right...

On the bright side, we now know where Hoffa went!
cool but eerie as hell.
How's the bottom?
Do you think that's where they chucked the bodies that they sacrificed? oooh, spooky!
That would be more scary walking in dark and falling in that pit of darkness. Brr so creepy.
