Fire Escape

The fire escape was really nice; even the counterweight was ornate!

First to comment! That is soooooo cool You never really see anything like that anymore.
ohmygod that's so... AWESOME. I wonder if they had money left over and was like, "fuck it! let's custom make the emergency exit too!"
Or entrance depending on if your urbexing or not.
The fire escape doesn't look to be original... the postcard on the location page (1907) and a 1909 postcard both do not include it, yet a 1930s postcard does show it.
To my knowledge, fire escapes like that weren't really required until after the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in 1911.

They may have had a different one on the opposite side, which may have been removed when the new one was put in.
If theres a fire, why not run for your life in style?
That is the fanciest fire escape I've ever seen!
What a beautiful fire escape. I used to live in the town where this place was, and not once did I even notice those when passing the place.
Watch for falling ice sickles! : ] oops...
