can see it in my mind, red neon welcoming the weary traveler to come and stay a few nights. Now its long been silenced
How discouraging to tourists who think they found a good looking hotel! :P
It doesn't look as much from the outside as it does inside.
The reddish tower building with the HOTEL STERLING sign and the connecting buildings were demolished, but the original building you see in the foreground is alive and well. What happened was, the original building was doing so well that someone opened the tower building as a seperate hotel. The owners of the original Hotel Sterling bought them out and built buildings connecting the two buildings. Alas, the tower building and all those connecting buildings got demolished. I'm still pretty angry about that. :-(
Keith I am with you on that. It's ashame those other buildings are gone.
Can someone say asbestos?
Ah! This reminds me of the "Hollywood Tower Hotel" sign on Tower of Terror in Disney World. That's awesome.
oh, i love those hanging traffic lights! you americans sure are crazy!
Neon like that is definitely missed. I think most traffic lights on poles I've seen are fastened on.
When I went to Wilkes University, I lived in an apartment on the 6th floor on the corner shown in this photo. It was close to school and certainly inexpensive. However, the smell of urine, trash, and mold made it difficult to breath at times. The penthouse suite would have been beautiful in its time. I was able to venture down in the basement and also the annex building, but never for too long or alone. The lobby must have been beautiful, even in its deteriorated state it was impressive!
Nice photos. Thanks for letting me relive some of my life.
