Here you can see the length of the wards inside - the hall continues behind me in the same fashion. The wings branch off to the right, but otherwise there are a row of windows, letting a large amount of light into the rooms.

The spray paint was in most places, and looked to be markers for the abatement crew (ACM = Asbestos Containing Material).

Just discovered this site a while ago, and was just finished up with all the archive stuff, I was gonna go back a look again and was thrilled to see something new.

Awesome to see some new stuff from ya, Motts. Even more awesome to see something that's not too far from where I live!
(By the way, it's pronounced ip-sil-AUN-tee)

very cool shot! I agree with it looking mirrored
Closing this place down is the reason why there are crazies roaming the streets of Ypsi... but they do make life in the neighborhood interesting!
Yay, new gallery. This looks promising!
It has much perspective., I love that!
As far as the eye can see! I sure am glad to be seeing more of your photos! Thanks....
It just seems to expand to forever, what a beautiful photograph. Actually, at first, it reminded me of looking into a mirror.
Mr. Motts another wonderful pictures. These look Awesome gallery. Thanks Motts.
I amazed that you take very good photos of these places. Thanks again Motts.
Isn't dangerous for your health to be in such floors (with asbestos)?
The shot is awsome anyway. It almost makes the place look cozy =P
well i think its not your best shot but its okay
Do you all wear masks in the old places? For fear of asbestos? My Grandfather died of lung tumors from asbestos.. hard way to go out!
... As an after thought.. the 'Asbestos Crew', reminds me of Danvers Hosp. in 'Session 9'... Such a shame what they did to that place.
My hubby & I "discovered" this cool old building on a drive one day. We took several shots of the outside but I never would have had the guts to go in! Thanks for the view(s)!!
cool shot senor motts.
You were in a room containing asbestos? Wow, be careful.lol
You people are nuts. Asbestos is not some magical killer that attacks you out of the blue. It's completely harmless unless it's disturbed especially if you cut or file it since you then make dust. People who died of asbestosis usually WORKED with it. Passive asbestos is a pain if you have to renovate a build (since it's hard to work with) and also a GREAT excuse to condemn something.
But it is not a massive killer like it's made out to be. Still in abandoned places a dustmask is a good idea because of the bird droppings.
The hospital no longer stands on the site.. It is now a Toyota plant.. It is so sad to see that the hospital was torn down.. It was a piece of Michigan history.. I wish I would have gotten to the site before it was tore down.. When we did deliver to the Toyota plant there (before the plant opened their doors) we were down in the basement and it felt real strange down there.. The air was heavy and I could breath.. I thought that it was funny with it being a new building.. You never know thou...
I'm glad you photographed this place before the demolition. The old B&W photos are fascinating. I wonder if anyone noticed the dentist in the archived pics wasn't wearing gloves. Wow, times sure have changed.
It is, yes, it is absolutely amazing! Thought it was a mirror at first.....
and the bleak colors and the light. It is perfect. And if it stretches the same way behind you...well.............you are a fine photographer, Mr. M.
This has brought back SO many memories for me. I worked at this State Hospital in the 70's and 80's. It was a wonderful place to work with alot of wonderful people. I loved the patients and still feel so sorry for those poor souls that literally lost the only home they knew when they closed in 1991. I had patients that had been born and raised there. They were children of patients and were doomed from birth. The hospital was acutally a little city within itself. All the employees were close and supportive of one-another and very patient oriented and friendly despite what some might have thought. I only wish I could have gotten inside there one more time before they demolished it. I still work with some others that worked there...now working in the Ann Arbor area. We share fun stories of YSH frequently. Our dear friend "Mickie" who is no longer with us was probably THE most dedicated employee there, in her own way...LOL...and I'm sure many remember this "Mickie" of whom I speak...with very fond and loving memories...may she rest in peace.
