Perhaps trying to discover how the brain of a mental person was different from a normal human in primitive ways..The patient was probably dead before hand though

The pictures of slices of brain! They were used to look for damaged areas. They can show where and if the person had had a lobotomy or a lobectomy. With rats they used a Stereotaxic instrument. Rather disgusting to see but fun to develop the pictures!
