a seclusion room?
Did you shut that door all the way behind you? I'd never be able to.
Yeah as much as I could - the seclusion rooms here had no latch mechanism, and they all pushed away from the inside, so unless something blocks you from the outside there aren't any worries.

Actually, I remember my friend stood just outside the door and blocked it with his foot after I took this shot, getting me worried for a moment before I realized he was there playing a trick...
I would hate to be stuck in that room for any amount of time
Motts, whats on the floor? Is that carpeting or just dirt?
Dirt I believe...
If I was sectioned in a hospital I don't think locking me in seculsion would calm me down at all. I imagen in most cases it would cause more stress for the patient.
That's sun coming through a window, right? I didn't think these isolation rooms had windows.

It probably would have helped prevent claustrophobia, though. And sunlight always makes me feel better.
God this is great. Makes you think of being a patient sitting in that room every morning, seeing the sun traveling across the wall, and wanting to be outside in it rather than sitting in your cage.
Wow I love the sun on the wall, it's super bright!
did they have windows that size in seclusion rooms? Lynn?
It's Lynne.
Optical illusion double exposure
Yes, the size is about right - you needed to be able to look in to make sure the person was OK if they suddenly got quiet. If the window was too big it would be distracting to the person who was supposed to be in a less stimulating environment and it would be too public - the person would become increasingly agitated and this is one of the few "interventions" they had before medications were developed.

A seclusion room was only supposed to be used if the person was too excited or wound up to be in a regular "stimulating" environment but they weren't supposed to be used if the person was suicidal or engaged in self-injurious behavior. Doesn't mean they always worked the way they "should" have or were always used the way they were designed, of course.
thank you lynn, wouldnt be the same without you
I see a trend, most of the rooms in this set have only the bottom 2/3 of the room painted and the rest from that point up to the ceiling is splatters...anyone have any ideas why?
I'm not sure if it's the reason, but someone once mentioned that his apartment was painted in the same fashion, and that it was used to enhance the natural light - the lighter top half was to brighten the room and the lower reduced glare. http://www.opacity.us/...on.htm#comment_24669
I don't think the top is spattered though, I think they first painted the entire room with the color then painted the white on top of it. Over the years, the white is coming off.

It is a subduing color, isn't it. Bland and sickly soothing.
The view is so peaceful. Don't mind closing the door behind you. I done it pretty often when I go exploring these places, just to shut out the hustle and bustle of the world and enjoy the sunlight and Nature.
lynne, sorry i keep spelling your name wrong. i just get excited and type faster than i think, or i think faster than i type, not sure wich, i due appreciate your invaluable info though no matter how bad my spelling gets! :}
I've been called many different things, so a mere misspelling is nothing - thanks. :-)
wow this pic makes me feel like i am in the room waiting for them to let me out
Motts, ever think of making a movie?
This is a great room. I don't know that I could shut the door though. With somebody outside like you did even.
If I was a patient in this room, as is, I wouldn't look out the window.. I'd stare at the reflection of light which would provide me a wider spectrum of fantasies of freedom and normality.. Great use of natural light..
if you look quickly, does anyone see something like a face peeking out from the little window in the door? on the left, like a tilted head, the eye being a bit below the upper left window corner?
of course, it's just the light or something
-mink-
I see the face. weird
For a seclusion room, it does have a unique beauty in this shot. Good pic! :-)
maybe the colours are supposed to sooth the paitent?
looks like my old cell when i was in the child development center
If only the walls could talk...
why is it always that same ugly shade of institution green in those hospitals? they used to paint everything that color down to refrigeorators. Does it really calm you down looking at the same ugly shade of green ALL day lol?
