Axle grease? To make you slip and fall or to mark you so they could catch you later? ;-)
Axle grease?? EIW!
But what was in place to protect the site from the wrecking ball....it's so depressing to lose such exquisite splendor when modern architecture is bland and not memorable.
Yeah, i'm curious about the Axel Grease myself...can you imagine the windows with stainglass and check out the patterned brick work!
Speaking of which, could you tell if any of the stained glass still remained, beneath the boards (as in, visible from inside the place)?
I noticed a very slight band of red streaking in from the outside in certain photos, but it was difficult to tell. They were on there pretty tight.
Fabulous shot, love the angle and the leaves framing the top!
so what WAS the point of the axle grease? Was is just to make people slip and fall?
It's just really nasty stuff that is very difficult to remove.

I remember it being smeared on some fences in the UK and called "anit-climb paint."
and once its on you the smell of it stays for days and days too.
Foreboding and beautiful all at once!
Axle grease is a step down from tar.
There is nothing there now, only grass. How sad that something so beautiful and full of history is no longer there--and now there is no clue that anything was ever there--except for your wonderful pictures.
