Are those weeds?
Well, it ain't the carpet ...
Reminds me of Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are."
Those old sofas must make a jolly reek!
That chandelier looks awfully familiar... I can't remember where I've seen it, but I know I've seen that design before...

I always love the photos of plants coming up through the carpet. So interesting to see nature taking over.
It was the 70's and 80's what else but shag carpet...
The new home decor fad-- sod carpets!
That chandelier is shaped like a pine cone. Nice art deco touch.
This is where I met my ex-wife back on Memorial Day in 1991!
Nice colour green there lol wonder if they have to mow the carpet now :o)
Motts, didja say it only closed in '98?!! It's gone to hell pretty fast, huh?
The light fitting is a late 60s / early 70s Scandinavian design. It looks quite out of place with the pastel colours and cheap sofas. I can imagine this place as a real Austin Powers pad at one time complete with leather couches, shagpile, and every shade of brown under the sun :-)
If you live nearby this place, go and grab that lamp in the ceiling quick! I would go there myself but the problem is that I live in Sweden. The lamp is made by Danish designer Poul Henningsen. His company PH have made lots of lamps but this one is rather sought after. Interesting is that the model is called "Cone" which you usually find on... pines! Here in Sweden the value on an old one is $1000 or more.

Please tell us here if you went and grabbed it!
No doubt why it was installed Peter! I wonder if the people who eventually re-fit this place (or more likely, tear it down) will appreciate the aesthetic and financial value of that centrepiece or whether it will just be smashed and slung in a skip along with those hideous couches :(

I'd still have serious qualms about removing something like that even though it is beautiful and its eventual destruction almost inevitable. Not the easiest thing to slip under your jacket and carry back to the car either... even if it weren't suspended 20 feet from the ground!
That was the 2nd floor lobby with the bar to the right next to the main dining room. Spent every summer there from 1974 through 1998...
robrot: who are you?
great light fixture. i want it.
If I remember this was on the 2nd floor ... I actually drove past where this was a few weeks ago for some reason I have no idea what possessed me to do so.. I found myself driving there and past it ...
I'm from Denmark and that lamp in the cieling is actually called "pine-cone". It is as someone stated designed by Poul Henningsen and depending on the age it could be worth as much as $ 25.000 on an auction. They're still being made and a new one that size cost around $ 25-30.000...

So, PLEASE go grab it, someone - in's a BIG shame to see something that beautiful (and valuable) go to waste
Amazing pic!
Tell me how to get there and I'd take out all the cool lighting in the buildings before the inevitable happens and the cops order the hotel torn down so people cant loiter in it.
Well, now we're all truly inspired to give you directions... I'll give you a hint: it's in the United States somewhere... Start looking!
"Tell me how to get there and I'd take out all the cool lighting in the buildings before the inevitable happens and the cops order the hotel torn down so people cant loiter in it."

Why take thing's that don't belong to you ? That would be like someone coming into your house and taking whatever they wanted. Another hint it's in the North East keep looking.

I was wondering if it was possible to transplant the carpeting. It would be neat having weeds growing in my livingroom. (LOLOLOL)
Actually, I dont need directions, I'll just use my Cadillac's GPS system and go from there.
those sofas were new when hotel closed
yo i dont know if u remember me or not but i am shelly regans son randy. well if u remember us she said hi
love everything about this shot. The couches are really cool and the light fixture is AWESOME! wish they would bring this place back to life
that light fixture is no longer there
within the past 2 months someone came along and took it
it was there....i'd say the end of march/beginning of april and now its gone
so keep your eyes on ebay to find the culprit
:o)
Someone had to sneak in their with a very long ladder -- what a shame!!
never had to mow my carpet, that is tooo crazy
Wasnt Me
Just to settle the debate, the lamp, if it IS a Henningsen (and not a knock-off), is the ARTICHOKE design, is about 33" in diameter, and is of very complex design...not something you could hack out with a pair of pliers & screwdriver. Also, they're selling at auction for around $1500-2500. Not worth it, IMO, for all the work and illegality...
http://www.fotopluss.no/fb/arkiv/000126.php
Havent seen it or anything other than postcards on ebay, so whoever took it probobly just kept it for a souvenier to save it from getting destroyed when the hotel eventually does
Whats the point of robbing stuff from abandoned places? Are you that desperate to own stuff that you would scavenge it? Its pathetic! Does anybody have any morals??? Anyone...???
JLP - maybe you could go find yours with your GPS....
Sian, this is not a place for you to insult people. Some don't think its wrong to take items from abandoned building, I do not think its wrong at all, you apararently do, were all entitled to our opinions, but shouldnt put others down for disageeing with them
Woah, easy up there!!!

Firstly, where is the insult? I am a humourous person, I like to have a laugh!!!!
Secondly, theft is not acceptable, no matter what the reason! Especially not for personal gain and I am not the only one that thinks this!!! And that is the end of that.
I'll make this brief. Just because this place is abandoned, does not mean that it is not owned by someone. Theft and vandalism is just what it is. And last time I checked, both were illegal. "Take only memories, leave only footprints."
Not to put too fine a point to this exercise in morality. It's private property., you may not have broken but you entered without permission, depending on the time of day, daytime, night time, misdemeanor, felony. If you "steal" something , (collect a souvenier) it becomes a felony. Y'see you committed a crime while committing a crime. I realize that's the extreme end of the charges spectrum, but depending on how tired the cops are, of people breaking in, and having to chase them. It could happen. Many police forces are less tolerant of UE'ers these days, and will overcharge. Figure on a heavy fine and court costs ,to go along with a donation to the victim witness fund ,plus community service. Unless of course you've been caught before and they're tired of your butt.
Looks like the second floor of the Railway Express Building that is on the Buffalo Central Terminal property. Motts you should know that place.
i'm saddened to hear the chandelier is gone. but setting aside the thievery. i hope it has a good home.
Im still checking e-bay, no sign of it yet
If it was stolen and not taken down by the owners, I'd be willing to bet it was their own hired security. Who else would have the opportunity to take something so large & hard to get to?
Maybe the owners simply dont care anymore, wonder whens the last they even went inside
Sad, that chandellier was tres cool!

I hope a Poul Henningsen fan has it, and is sitting under it this minute enjoying its company.
Still no sign of it on ebay
I kind of like the growing carpet....brings the outside in and gives a new name to home decor. :)
Some body needs to mow the carpet.
okay, I just HAVE to squeeze 2 inside jokes in here, my bad...

Felyne: I don't wana know just how many cats used this place as a litterbox (or monkeys)...

Motts: do you think that thingy up there dispenses pine-scented soap?

XD sorry, sorry. this pic just has too many inside jokes squeezed into its many green, interesting nooks and crannies... ;)
OMG You're right! That's not a lamp, its a pine scented air freshener!
Ha! Pine scented soap!
looook!
http://ineedattention....pper_lobby_sum02.jpg
There's the upper lobby and bar
Looks like either a lot of peeling paint or toilet paper from "mischief night"
This pic is pretty recent and it shows it as still being there
http://ineedattention....in_lobby_flooded.jpg
I was there earlier this year and I have pictures of the fixture still standing.I went back a few days ago and was extremely sad to see it gone.
I dont believe the Pines has any private security.
Once someone notes something of value in these places,no sooner it gets stolen.
I hate chandelier's and that has to be one of the ugliest chandelier's that I have ever seen.

Signed: An American Soldier stationed in Germany.
Joseph and I prove the point; beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
ooooooooooo natural carpet!
Not only are there plants in the carpet, but they seem to have bloomed.
They started the "Green" trend. Just look at the oxygen producing carpet
This is a cool picture(:
OMG. I went here one fall weekend in the late 70s (maybe 1978?), part of a group of students from Queens College. The place was already run-down...some friends had to switch rooms because their first room was infested with bees! I do have vivid memories of hanging out in the lobby and watching a bunch of students getting drunk and going for a midnight swim...

The chandelier is "Koglen" by Danish Poul Henningsen. VERY expensive.
Wow, I always wanted a carpet Chia Pet!
The light fixture is very simular to one that has been, well i guess, redesigned, in the past two years out of Europe. It is very popular in the hospitality design feild, and it was also in the movie run fat by run at the two story apartment of the boyfriend (random, i know..)
I love that pinecone shaped light hahah
frealgrl04, hilarious! A chiacarpet is exactly what that looks like! What a damn shame.
This is an awesome place! They don't make 'em like that anymore. Thank you, Mr. Motts, for taking a stroll down memory lane.
this is great, the lamp, the furniture, the weed.. crazy! :)
Flowers in the living-room - directly growing there!

I once stayed at a hostel with real mushrooms growing on the bathroom-florr - unfortunately the hostel was still running...^^
Dandelions in the lobby - KILLER! New favorite!
It is weird, there is the modern furniture in an abandoned building with the plants on the floor. That is a scary contrast. I think it is really scary for those who remember having stayed in this hotel before it closed!

I have read that the lampshades are gone. Well it's illegal because there must be an owner somewhere. But on the other hand, it's somehow good news, because they are safe from damage. And they are supposed to be valuable, as someone stated. Even if they haven't been discovered on ebay, it does not mean that they are just a souvenir. maybe there were sold in a shop for antique furniture.

Kind regards from Germany!
That does not look like it was ever warm and cheery......grey and green.......clinical...
Sorry but I'd rather see them be saved than end up smashed to bits in some junk pile somewhere. How could the owners NOT know the valuable light fixtures were there? If I knew that and it was my property I would go in and remove them and then let the wrecking ball have at it (provided I couldnt afford to save the place, of course).
At least it didnt go to waste. Glad someone had the guts to go get it before people that dont care just scooped it up with the rubble.
Yes, that PH lamp "Kotte"; you can get a small one from Svenssons i Lammhult,, Sweden, in stainless steel for $ 8.653, still in fashion, liked and trendy. Don´t defend taking/stealing the light, but i do hope it is being taken care of and is loved and enjoyed, brightening a room up: it is huge! A very good shot.
