No one appreciates wire mesh over an old radiator until they've been pushed into or fallen onto one. ;-)

I'd imagine that mesh can get pretty hot as well.
I gave myself a pretty good burn falling into one of those things in my old house. Not fun.
There's some word for the type of metal they use for the mesh that keeps it from conducting heat so it's significantly cooler than the radiator itself. Come on you technical types - what's the word?

We had radiators like that at our dance studio. We used to warm our feet there.
