I think I am noticing the absence of a sink... My world is askew now..

They sometimes will do that (my high school chemlab had something like this) when the intended purpose is only for the faucets to be connected to tubes to send water elsewhere. Nothing is intended to be washed there, it's only a supply. There's a drain of course, but it's only big enough to catch whatever drips from a loose fitting or someone wanting to fill something up beneath the fixture.

Actually those are not faucets. They are gas hookups. The nozzles on the end of the "faucet" are made for rubber hoses to fit over them which would hook up to whichever instrument required gas.

I've seen faucets with hose connections just like in the photos in my college's science labs. Things like distillation apparatus require a water supply, which you connect by a hose to one of those faucets.

It looks to me (enclosed space, sloping rear wall) that this is inside a fume hood.

It's nearly mid-night over here Joe so I know how you feel. Crazy that a guy like me is looking at photo's of abandoned buildings at midnight and not porn.

I think the world really has gone askew... or at least my brain has.

Maybe I'm seeing things, but it does look like there is a ovular sink underneath what are probably water faucets.

in my high school we had some facets that looked like this but then were in chem lab and were used when using flame the carried gas not water
