It's hard to make out whats going on in this shot; it's pretty damn busy. Nice.
Those are probably remnants of dust masks worn by miners to keep coal dust out of their lungs. Most still got coal and rock dust in their lungs and developed what is known as black lung.
Way back in the late 1800's and through to the mid 1900's coal was a very important commodity especially for travel. I mean the total tonage required for the Titanic to cross the Atlantic was incredible! The world revolved around coal, that is until gasoline and airplanes took over.

Coal is still an enormous part of the energy source for the world today, including electrical generation.
That is the top piece of a W65 self rescuer, which is a cartridge respirator of sorts that is used in case of fire in the mine. It changes carbon monoxide (extremely deadly) to carbon dioxide and allows the miner to escape in an emergency
